Engine Whine
#1

Hello,

I have been searching but I can not quite find the information that I need. I need some help with an engine noise. On cold start up, there is this whine from the engine. I was told that this is normal after a minute or so after start up and then go away once everything warms up. After some recent engine work, it is not going away after a few minutes and is staying. It is engine related I believe since it does not happen only when the tranny is engaged. I read about the jet engine noise being the bearings in the tranny. I don't think that is it. I talked to the previous owner and he told me that Porsche told him it was T-belt related on the cold start up. The sound tends to go away at cruising speed. Most apparent during acceleration.

Here is what repairs I have had done recently.

T-belt

water pump

fan belts

balance shaft seals

oil cooler hoses

Manual and 135K on the clock.

Thanks in advance

Brian

Balance shaft belt is probably a little on the tight side.

First listen to the sound with the hood up (is it near the water pump or the clutch), if it's near the front; mist some water on the drive belts (PS, WP...) one at a time while its running if the noise stops or gets worse then you have a loose belt, if no change then you need to dig in deeper to the t-belts

If the T belt and balance belt are new then they should stretch a bit after some miles and noise should go away. Mine had a whine after fresh builts and it has gone away now.

+1 on tight BS belt. Usually the timing belt can't be too tight because of the autotensioner, but the BS belt can easily be overtightened.

Common knowledge tells us the BS belt should be set to about 28lbs tension (like if you use the Kricket), but I put mine a little bit looser to eliminate the noise. I guess it would be better to live with the noise and set the belt to the right spec but I hate that whining noise. And so far so good...

Thanks guys for the advice. I will give it a few more miles before I start to really worry about the noise then. The 968 is a weekend car so it doesn't get as much use to break in the new belts.
