968 Sport manual flywheel marks

Hi all,


I am getting my 968 ready for new belts, shaft seals, varicam gear, head job (decided to go mad and do the lot in one hit ?). Previous experience of similar was on a 944 turbo. Today I set the engine at what should be no 1 TDC firing ready to lock. No problem doing that on the cam pulley marks. However I obviously wanted to check the bottom end is genuinely at TDC and given that the upper flywheel marks are reportedly hard to use on an old engine I took off the lower flywheel cover panel expecting to see TDC marks, see attached pic. Im thinking that maybe this engine variant doesnt have them there like the 944 as I can see nothing useable?? If not time to break out the dial gauge I guess but I thought Id just check that I wasnt missing them? Advice appreciated

From under the car there is a hole in the metal fly wheel dust cover, you will see the timing marks through that, you won't find a OT mark at the top


It's all in the workshop manual, and on Clarke's garage


To confirm the piston is at TDC, I use a long wooden kebab stick down number 1 plug hole, it's quite easy to get these one tooth out.


You will need a flywheel lock tool to undo the crank pulley it's very tight you cannot get the belts over the pulley


You also need it off to replace the crank seal and the oil pump gear and O ring.

Thanks for that! I’ll look at Clarke’s more thoroughly. Thinking on it the kebab stick idea is great for this stage in as the cams are being retimed accurately later using a dial gauge for accurate TDC. Lock is arriving tomorrow. I just need the engine solid and in a safe state for disassembly.
