Flywheel Lock...again
#1

Ok,

So, this car is a junk yard rescue. The belts and front gears were all off when I found it. Putting it all back together.

I am at the point of belts install and timing.

I dont have the Flywheel lock yet!!,

New cam pads, chain, head gasket, oil seals, bolts nuts, rollers, pulleys, etc.

Engine is verified at TDC

Cams have all new parts, and verified to be 7 link separation an innstalled to where the cam gear reference mark lines up perfectly with the mark on the plastic guard back half.

Balance shaft gears installled with "0" on top gear keyway and Opposite on Bottom gear keyway. All torqued to spec.

I understand that one of the main reasons to use the Lock is to torgue or loosen crank bolt.

Crank bolt is loose.

Can I perform the belt change and Cam timing with out the lock now that everything is in position?

If NO, can i perform all of the above to get timing really close and then go back and final adjust when the lock comes in?

Thnx

for all input.

My son and I have trouble alighning our schedules so we want to get as much done as possible.

no, because you cannot set the critical cam timing without positive lock. also, it will be extremely difficult to lock the other items in place without it.

i have one here that i picked up so i could "load" it out to members. i just never set it up. my thinking is that for the price of round trip shipping, a member could borrow it. they would paypal a deposit to me, which would cover the shipping both ways, as well as replacement if the member didn't return it. i would then refund the deposit, less shipping. i'll start a thread in "tool time".

note: on the balance shaft gears, make sure that both keyways are pointing "up". this is very critical. it's not just the "0".
