From under the car there is a hole in the metal fly wheel dust cover, you will see the timing marks through that, you won't find a OT mark at the top
It's all in the workshop manual, and on Clarke's garage
To confirm the piston is at TDC, I use a long wooden kebab stick down number 1 plug hole, it's quite easy to get these one tooth out.
You will need a flywheel lock tool to undo the crank pulley it's very tight you cannot get the belts over the pulley
You also need it off to replace the crank seal and the oil pump gear and O ring.
