Ok so I need a little help. I currently have a 94 968. I'm in the process of restoring the full car. I've decided I want to make a performance engine for the car. Basically I'm looking for a spare 968 engine or block and head that I can build up how I want. Where can I find a complete engine or block and head

If they are still in business, LAAP ( aka Los Angeles Auto Parts ) in Sun Valley California always had quite a few 968s ( mostly totaled but with intact engines ) . I had one of my 968 engines completely rebuilt top to bottom there, including a new block transplanted from another 968. The owner ( Henry Tahmasian ) no longer works on cars but last I communicated with him he simply ran the dismantling and parts selling business . Hopefully they’re still around, he’s a great guy and super honest, reliable businessman.

No website . I am guessing he may have sold the business, and it’s probably operating under a different name ( it was a large yard and warehousing facility, with numerous Porsches including 944s, 911s, Boxsters, etc ) so to me it seemed to be a lucrative business which one would not close, even during a pandemic, but who knows... I’ll send him an email and see if I get a response .

You could try Oklahoma Foreign, too. I dont know what their supply of 968s is these days (most yards dont keep many 25 year old cars) Its where I got a bunch of stuff circa 2010.
Theres a few that pop up on eBay, but, as they say, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

Companies like RS barn have been building these engines for race cars and performance for years, and you not gain any real power without forced induction
The best engine that RS built was just over 300bhp but the cost was huge 10-12,000 dollars I believe
Chasing power seems to be a full on pass time for these cars and is a real waste of money, if its not fast enough you bought the wrong car

Pete built mine. It was 238 at the wheels. It was quick and lite. I opted not to go to 300 because it put to much stress on the engine. Our engines are not readily available. Despite the gain most cars were faster than mine on the straights. The corners were a much different matter. Ten years ago the complexion of cars on the tracks was much different. Today the number of high hp cars is mind boggling. Doesn’t t mean the drivers are better especially with the nannies correcting their mistakes but boy they are fast!

Love to hear a few details. Close to being finished w/ mine. Headers, chip, RSBarn stage I cams (RSBarn is recently out of business). Different injectors. I upgraded the fuel pump. No dyno yet, but considering a chassis dyno. IMHO, Rap's 238 at the wheels has got to be solid and probably all one could do and still have it streetable??? I did not want a blower and have not seen too many common turbo options.
I'd say my biggest worry (a bit off topic) is that parts are becoming expensive and more rare. They didn't make too many 968's.....not a big repro parts market.

The parts problem only strengthens the reason not to tune your car up
At 150mph they are more than fast enough, and searching for more power becomes a expense of diminishing returns
With all those parts added did you have the valve seats recut and the guides checked, one of the biggest power losses is valve rattle in the seats and blow past, at the mileage of my car, a full head rebuild would probably return 40 bhp to the tank,

Definitely agreeing with Waylander re the parts issues. As for the 150 mph being fast enough ( with which I also partially agree ) there is , nonetheless a big difference ; it’s how quickly you get to 150 mph that matters ; there are countless diesel MBZs that can go 150 mph , effortlessly, but it takes them about three weeks to get to that speed . So if you can beef up / tune the engine without compromising too many other things as a result of it and possibly increasing their risk of failure or premature wear , you’ll significantly enhance the driving experience of the 968 .
