Engine re-assembly mysteries
#1

Well, I knew this was going to happen. I tool pretty careful pictures and notes about the "big stuff" on my engine, but not so much when it came to all the hoses, sensors, heat shields, connectors, etc., especially since I thought I would be re-assembling in a few weeks, not the nearly year(!) that it's taken to get all the parts back.

Anyway, I have a couple of mysteries. The first is a pair of M8 threads on the left side of the block, just in front of the air/oil separator, near the bottom of the block:

No idea why only one of the threads has a bolt in it...

The second is a fairly small heat shield, for which I can't match up the holes to any of the threads:

If anyone who's rebuilt their engine, or had someone else do it and took pictures along the way, and can clue me in as to what these items are, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

I am totally sympathizing with you, as I've done the same thing. Maybe not on a 968 or even on quite so spectacular an undertaking, but I've been in your shoes.

I am one of the lucky ones , taking things appart and putting them back together don't need a foto .

But i understand the confusion , bolt holes with no use , or maybe used durng assembly .

One of them holds a smal bracket for the wiringing loom and needs one of those plastic clips wich fall appart after so many years , the other one is the heatshield for the right engine mount .

But keep up the good work , getting close to finish now .

Yep, that's what those things are for. Having a photographic memory (which I most certainly don't!) would sure come in handy in an engine rebuild! But, as you say, it is coming together. It's kind of like a treasure hunt - I've been looking through photos I'd taken of the engine long before the rebuild for clues as to how some of the parts go back on, and I've had some success. Hopefully I'll have it wrapped up in the next few days, but I have a lot of other things going on today (plus the hour lost due to daylight savings time isn't helping), so I don't think I'll get a whole lot done today, but I should be able to take at least one day off work this coming week and get a long way toward wrapping up.

I thought that was the mark of a great engine builder - managing to get it running having left out a whole bunch of, obviously, useless parts!
