E-bay manifold/supercharger project
#1

Saw this while surfing e-bay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...=ADME:B:EF:US:1

Forget the manifold for a minute and scroll down the page to the supercharger setup. Anybody here own this car? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I sent the seller an e-mail asking who did the work and if the A/C was still functional. I'll post again if I get an answer.

But if it's anyone on this board, do tell!

Best,

Buzz

I also left him an Ebay message about our forum and asked him to login and share pics and HP.

I hope that he takes us up on the offer!

I bet it is Tony Garcia's old car. He had the same Huntley Racing alum. expansion tank that I had. Also that is a roots setup also built by Huntley. I don't think they made more then 1 or 2 kits.

Eric/Flash - Your guess is correct...just received confirmation from the seller, he bought from Tony/Huntley. He also says "running acceptably, not perfectly...installing an engine management system, so basically still a work in progress. Runs strong, not stellar".

Drat...thought that might otherwise lead to something good.

yeah - he told me it never did really run right - he was going to swap out the blower in there now for a whipple, but then lost interest in the project altogether, and sold it - i think he still has a manifold ready to install one

nice guy when you get past the rough edges - he's really into the cars too

wish i could have seen the car though before he sold it

Hi all.

Boy you guys have good memories. Yep, it sure is the Tony Garcia/Huntley car. I bought it off Tony two and half years ago quite by accident. I was simply looking for a black 968 with a gray interior. I love black and I wanted the gray because I live in Phoenix. Works too. Seats never get too too hot and cool quickly. But that's not what you all are interested in.

So, for the supercharger...Well, it is hard for me to comment on performance gains as I have never driven a stock 968. All I can say is that others who have driven it say it feels stronger, especially in the mid range. So take that for what it's worth (not much really). No dyno runs yet although Tony gave me one that showed rwhp and torque peaking about 275. Personally, I don't think I it is putting out that much. As you know (or learn) you have to take what Tony says with a little grain of salt. What I can say is that I love the performance as it is right now and...this is big for me of course...the A/C is intact and works awesome.

Now for the bad. Basically, the conclusion I have come to is that the stock Porsche ECU doesn't like things...um...not normal. The car runs absolutely horrible when cold. I have to let it warm up for a minimum of 5 minutes before she'll idle nice and then I still can't 'get on it' until it's reached normal operating temp. After having talked with a few "experts", we figured the best chance of getting the car to run it's best is to install a stand alone engine management system and that is basically where we're at now. We are going to do a base line dyno run sometime this week (I hope) and then have the new eng. mgmt. sys. installed the following week, when there will be additional dynos taken obviously to tune it and so forth. So we'll see.

When I bought the car from Tony, I understood that it was still a work in progress. Infact, that is one of the reasons I bought it. I was actually looking forward to seeing this project through to its full potential. Unfortunately, I picked the exact wrong career at the worst possible time...I, am a pilot. And as you may know, we have been getting our shorts handed to us. So, I am really not the right person to complete this project. But I love the car so much and I think we are so damn close that I am determined persevere. (I forgot how good Raman noodles can be)

Cheers,

Jeff

Interesting thread from my point of view. I bought my club sport in 2005 and throught the performance was great - did a bit of surfing and found out about the supercharging aspect.

My '68 was subsequently supercharged by 9M (Colin Belton of 9M posts here), and in spite of the +60% output at 370+ bhp, which I posted pre and post dyno readings of, the car has lost none of its driveability. No probs from cold start, and due to the radiator conversion it runs cooler than a stock 968.

Living in England I don't have ac, then again our climate seldom warrants it!

All the best,

Fraser.

that is one of the drawbacks of having moved to los angeles, and the entier reason i stepped out of the much lighter, faster and better handling mgb and into this car - up in the bay area, i rarely wished i had ac, and would just drive a diffferent car on that day - down here, it's a must throughout the summer

at 370hp, i presume you've a stiffer rear suspension than stock - at 280 i already had to do that - the car just squats too much - i'd keep an eye on your rear suspension bushings, primarily the rear lower control arm bushings, because the extra power puts them in an incredibly difficult position, but that would be a fun car to drive

The car is still very much a work in progress, however yes, I've upgraded the suspension to KW variant 3 coilovers at the front and back, as well as putting 928GTS calipers on the front, complimented by RS discs. Traction further helped by a set of 18 inch BBS trans AM wheels, with Goodyear Eagle F1 boots on them.

Many thanks for the valued advice about suspension bushings, which I'll make sure I keep and eye on.

We recently bought for my wife a Toyota MR2 Roadster, which I understand is marketed in North America as the midship runabout - has A/C as well as the softtop and a bolt on hardtop, so the best of all worlds really (however I still prefer my clubsport!).

Kind regards,

Fraser
