The driver's side rear view mirror has broken, only the glass. Actually the glass fell out of the mount, if it didn't break I would have glued it back in.
However the mount seems to be connected to the innards of the whole mechanism. And I can't quite figure out how to replace it. Here is a pic of the replacement part that Sunset sent. There is a ring on the back which rotates.
Here is a pic of the bottom end.
From a post from Bob Blackwell some time ago, the method of replacement is to insert a screwdriver into the hole at the bottom of the mirror housing to release the retaining ring that holds this thing in place. I found the same general instructions in the workshop manual. I guess I should rotate this ring using the little indentations, which appear to be made to insert a screwdriver. There also appears to be a locking pin.
So after getting out the circular saw to see what is inside the mirror housing (just kidding). Any suggestions? I tried to turn the retaining ring via the hole in the bottom of the housing, but very difficult to know how much pressure to apply, and if I got the locking pin undone. etc. Thanks.

Ok sports fans, got 'er done. Pain trying to turn the ring, and even worse trying to determine if the ring has been turned far enough to pull the unit out without breaking the internals that are supposed to remain inside. Here is a picture of the inside for the next guy in case it helps. My tips I could add:
- push the ring (the bottom of the ring with the little slots) toward the door to loosen.
- before installing maybe lubricate (contact cleaner?) the the area where the ring contacts the part inside the mirror so the ring turns easier when trying to secure it. I didn't do this and had to spend more time fiddling to try to convince myself that the locking pin was in the slot.
- the insulation around the plugs for the heating element was all toast, weathered and disintegrated. I didn't replace this since there is no nearby threat of short. Honestly, the last time it snowed here more than a flurry was in 1967 so I wasn't too worried.
Oh, and in the picture you can see I cut away a part of the mirror housing to see if that would help me see inside. Qualified mechanics (as opposed to kitchen) won't have to do this <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
