One quirk left in the sunroof mechanism...
#1

After maybe 20 hours of troubleshooting every component in the sunroof assembly, replacing the gears, adjusting the microswitches, and placing the arm which holds the cable by the motor in place back into its proper position, my sunroof now *almost* works - there's just quirk left. Say it's in the locked position. When I turn the key to the first position, and press the console switch, nothing happens. Then, when I turn the key to the second position, I can raise the sunroof to the "vent" position, and then let it back down to the locked position without any problems - this works every time. After doing this one raise/lower exercise, I can now turn the key to the first position, and unlock the sunroof, and then re-lock it. In other words, for some reason, I need to raise it to the tilt position before I can get the console switch to unlock and lock the sunroof. It's as though there's something about the vent/lower process that allows the sunroof mechanism to "find itself" and do what it's supposed with the key in the first position. Anybody have a clue as to what this might mean, and what I might be able to do to get it to respond to the console switch to lock or unlock it the first time? Thanks.

lol - wow - might have been easier to weld in a lid

anyway - i think that might be normal - it's like the windows which operate after you turn off the key, until you open the door - can anybody verify?

Yeah, good point - had I known how much time this was going to take, I might have considered welding in a lid.

I pretty sure that once upon a time, it I was able to unlock the sunroof with the center console switch on the first try, so I'd be surprised if its current behavior is normal, but who knows? I'd like to see what other peoples' experience is.

Yes Flash, the window thing is correct. But as soon as the door is opened, the window will not operate with the key off or out.

If it does, I'm going to google "hari-Kari", because it would mean there was never anything wrong with my sunroof in the first place, other than the stripped gears, which have little to do with what drove me to do all the troubleshooting in the first place.

But I find it hard to believe that you can't get into the car, realize that since it's a nice, sunny day, it would be cool to remove the sunroof, and, following the instructions on page 53 of the owners manual, place the key in the ignition, turn it to position 1, and depress the back half of the console switch to unlock the sunroof. The manual doesn't say anything about first turning the key to the ON position, and lifting the sunroof to the vent position, then lowering it back to the locked position, and only then going through the procedure to unlock it. Although it is a little disturbing that the manual describes how the raise the sunroof to the vent position before describing how to remove it. However, the manual doesn't imply (at least as I read it) that there's any linkage between the two operations. Any other experiences out there? Thanks.
