Door falling apart?
#1

Heard some jangling when I closed the door. Took the vent out of the door and was able to retrieve these bits from the bottom of the door directly under the handle. The coin is a nickel for comparison.

For those of you who have been in a door any idea what is about to fall apart in mine?

Thanks

The washer is thicker than a nickel.

I've never had a window problem, but I'd guess it's a regulator bushing.
Does the window work properly?

Dunno. Frankly I'm a bit nervous to move the window or close the door. whatever that was holding together must have been heavy and is ready to fall down. I need "the anatomy of a door" Nothing in Clarke's garage that I could see.

A phillips screw driver and a Doan's back ache pill will get you your answer. The door panel is pretty straight forward. Chances are that it attaches to the particle board on the panel.

The parts shown are in no way related to the door panel, door handle or mirror.

Hopefully a past mechanic left some parts from another project behind, but I dubt it.
I'd remove the panel and investagate.

I doubt that these are left behind from a previous entry into the door. They made a very loud clunk as though they fell off of something. I'll check out the posts on door panel removal. Spectial tool right? Any quick tips on where to find said tool?

most decent auto parts stores carry a door panel removal tool - basically it's a fork shaped device with a pivoting lever that looks a bit like a set of pliers - the fork gets under the panel, and provides even pressure against it as the hinged lever applies force to the door - this pops the panel off without damaging the clips or the panel

If your careful, you could use a screwdriver to pry the clips. I think there are four of the along the trailing edge. One down low in the corner and three going vertical.
Also pay attention to the brackets that support the top of the speaker enclosure.
There are two of them. They can be a little fiddley on assembley, but it is rather simple.

Agree with the fiddly bit when reassembling the door arm rest brackets; getting the Philips screws in the right plane can be a bit of a challenge. I have had my doors off several times and my panels have always popped off with just a mild finger pull.

Not that I need 6 different versions but it's a lot cheaper than having to fix the door panel and all the clips that I just broke.

Harbor Freight also carries several different plastic prybar sets. I have found them more than adequate for my needs, they have not broken, and they are dirt cheap.

Got to the bottom of this. Thanks for all the help and a big thanks to 968gene and his obsession with door handle gaskets. The DIY helped tremendously.

Anyway, grabbed a panel puller from Pep Boys - likely one of the best $10 I've ever spent. I have ruined a few door panels in my day...

The parts had fallen off of a plastic piece that runs in the rearward window guide inside the door. That piece is attached to the window itself with the bits that had fallen off. A few nicks and viola the piece is together again - 60 minute repair with plenty of time for being careful.

Plastic piece on Window - this is towards the rear of the door.

Taken with the window about 3/4 of the way down.

The 3 pieces that fell off arranged as they go on the glass - the gap is where the glass belongs. Left is outside.

A small adjustable is all you need.

Done
