Does your 968 have a name?
#1

Some people get attached to their automobiles, and personify them with a name.

My 968 is named Athena Joy. Athena, as in the Greek goddess, and the character in Battlestar Galactica. More specifically the character played by Maren Jensen, but Grace Park's character is also a hottie.
Joy, as in Joy to drive, obviously.

I think it would be interesting to know if other people have names for their 968s, and the background behind those names.

No, but not because I'm against naming cars. Quite the contrary. All my previous cars have had names, but they all came from the character or personality that came out from the car itself. One really hasn't popped out yet with my 968. Barely one year of ownership so far.

Names of previously owned cars:

Shark Bite (Blue '82 Toyota Corolla that had an odd indentations on the passenger door... looked like a shark bite.)
Little Red (Red '89 Ford Ranger. My dad had a Red Ford F-150, aptly named BIG Red.)
Green Machine (Green '83 Porsche 944. Not factory. Florida A&M Rattler Green. No, I didn't choose that. PO was from Tallahassee...)
The Hearse (White '68 Plymouth Belvedere station wagon. Yeah... I'm getting the notion that all my nicknames for my cars are obvious...)
The two Bimmers we owned in Germany never got named.

I need to get this one named though!

Not really. Though Iris might be a good name, for all too obvious reasons..

That said, this whole tradition of giving cars female names without at least questioning or debating the reasoning behind it must be addressed, IMO Hey, the 968 is a manly car and should be named accordingly - if you want to name your Boxster Sheila ( or maybe a German name.. Ursula ) go right ahead, but I'm thinking there has
to be a way to differentiate the geneder of automobiles and determine which warrant feminine names and which masculine ?

Discuss !

No Name for my 968 as of now...

Per the Male vs. female discussion

Male:

Chuck (as in Norris) or Arnold (Terminator)

Female:

Ann (Boleyn) or Marilyn (Monroe) since the 968 is my Mistress.

I also like the colour idea. My white coupe is the "white car" and my blue cab is the "blue car". Makes it easy to remember, especially for us old guys. But the white car could easily be called "moneypit". No explanation needed.

never been compelled to name a car, but my other ride is frequently referred to as "big ass truck" since its a chevy silverado with 6 inch lift on 35's. does that constitute a gender bias?

Yes, POS!!!! when it misbehaves, as it has this week by disengaging the passenger side door lock from the automatic locking system but not the alarm system.

I have never named a car due to a comment my father once made about the neighbours who owned a Jaguar. He always thought the guy was a pretentious prick because he wouldn't say he was taking the "car" somewhere, he would say he was taking the "Jag". That was 25 years ago and now that I have had a few Porsches I see he was less than informed about the passion involved. So now I do find myself personifying/objectifying the car; if I go somewhere damnit, I'm taking the "Porsche!"

Yes although it is obviously ill named. My wife refers to our 968 as the Super Coupe. Like in "are you taking the "Super Coupe"? The standard answer is "if the battery isn't dead"

No name for mine. If I did name it and used said name, my wife would mock me to no end!!!

If I were forced to name it, I suppose my first choice would be "bumble"...

Claudia II

Claudia was my first Porsche a red 1987 944 w/ 67Kmiles at the time. She had never been named, to my knowledge. A friend of ours from Munich once rode through Center City Philadelphia in the back seat of that car, if you can call it a back seat. After that sacrifice, we felt it and all only appropriate that we name the car in her honor. When my current Porsche came along, I made a deal with Claudia that I would always use her name. Otherwise, there might have been words between the two...

Caveat: I admit to using other names for her when she does not behave herself, but I can not repeat them here in this proper forum.
