DME - does brand matter?
#1

I checked and found that my '92 probably has the original DME relay (944 part #). On a quick search, I find prices from $14 for URO brand all the way up to $94 (genuine Porsche). Has anyone had bad luck with the lower priced manufacturers?

By a few cheap ones and keep them in the glove box, you should have at least on in there anyways.

I ordered mine from Sunset (a while ago) it was about $27. Haven't priced them recently but $94 seems excessive.

Those prices are from Pelican. I didn't call Sunset (where I mostly buy parts) yet. They usually sell the genuine replacement parts, so I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that they would be on the high end of the price range. I just wasn't sure if it mattered in this case to have genuine or OEM.

there is another ( recent ) thread somewhere where one poster cautioned that URO may be crap, he recieved one and it was "dead out of the box" . I bought the OE one from Sunset just a couple of months ago ( to keep as a spare in my second 968 ) and if I recall correctly it was about $ 55... which surprised me, because they were only about $ 20 for a long time..

I've used both - My car had a URO parts one in it when I bought it. It died one morning after arriving at autocross. Luckily, a few smart 944 owners had extras in their glove boxes. I got home and realized that the PO had given me the original DME with my car. Found that one of the solder joints had cracked - a quick dab of solder and it was back in perfect working condition. I could not figure out what went wrong with the URO parts one, but bought a new one for $14 to keep in the glove box and tested it when it arrived to ensure it worked. If your OEM one fails, or even before it fails, add a little extra solder to the main solder points.

Rock Auto they are like $10. I bought 6 after my car didn't start and I needed BanditSC to teach me that banging it on the concrete can help get you home!! Lesson learned!!! LOL

"Genuine" is $64 at Sunset. I ended up buying a Stribel brand DME from Pelican for $29.25 plus shipping. They (Stribel) are supposedly an OEM supplier to Porsche. So, I went cheap-er, but not cheap-est. I'll install the new one and carry the old one as a spare.
