Does the DME controller control the dash warning lights? For example , when I turn on my ignition all my dash lights light up except the Check Engine Light. If this is the case, doesn't that mean that my DME is working but the bulb for the CEL might be burned out? Or might it be deeper than that? I'm in a no start situation so I'm fishing. Without that light, I can't read the flashing fault codes.

It's hard to say Harvey since you're a pioneer. I would definately pull the clustor and check the bulb. It might very well mean the ignition power is supplied fine, but that the DME is not responding. I don't know.

Someone suggested an interesting approach...since my CEL is not working...why not just move the DME wire for the CEL to another dash light...and count the fault light codes on that other dash light...saving me from pulling my dash right now. That's better than my idea of hooking up a small light to the wire for the CEL as it comes out of the DME controller.



You know, if I smacked my forhead everytime I said, "Why didn't I think of that" I'd have brain damage. After seeing all my posts, I'm sure there are some who are convinced of that already. Either way, I love my black 968! Among the 928 owners, there are those who believe that black is faster than Guards Red. I'm not sure but I aim to find out...if (when) I get my car running.

I'm not quite sure how you would do it, but remember, when the ignition is turned to on, all lights are lit, so if you use a different light to test the "check engine" codes, you will have to disconnect the primary power source to that bulb. You might just be better buying a "test light pen" or something.

To answer my own question...the Check Engine dash light (CEL) will not light up and show you fault codes if the DME is not getting power. Therefore, if you want to diagnose your engine using the fault lights...and you think the lights are burned out, you'd be wasting your time trying to get the lights to work to do this if the DME is at fault. Most (if not all) of the dash lights work without DME power...except the CEL light. When I got power to my DME, the CEL immediately came on and I was able to successfully read fault codes.
