944S vs 968: Does tach bounce on no start?
#1

I've been reading that when a 944 is cranking..but not starting...that the tach hand tends to bounce, showing that the reference sensor is working. Is this also true for the 968? When I crank...with a brand new ref. sensor, I detect no tach bounce at all.

Hmm... you are exactly right as far as the tach needle bouncing for the 944 and 944 Turbo. These models had two sensors to determine speed and reference. The 944S (IIRC), 944S2, and 968 all use only one sensor, but it seems as if the tachometer bounce would still take place. I wish I could give you something definitive here... Maybe Rustech or Greimann will come along soon. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Best of luck, buddy, and hang in there!

I only have one nerve and this car's starting to get on it! Actually, by the time I get this problem unraveled, I'll know the ins and outs on this car better than I know my wife! And, hopefully, my BTDT experience will help someone else as mechanically disadvantaged as I am. I appreciate this forum. Without this kind of help, I wouldn't own a super sports car like this.

Harvey, I have never heard of the tach bounce. I disconnected my ignition wires and cranked it to check for you. For the first second, there is no movement in the tach needle. After that, it bounces within 100rpm. Whether it's the reference sensor, or the chassis shake with cranking, ?. Good luck.

That was nice of you to check, Rustech. I'd read that about the 944 but I don't see any bounce on my tach needle. I'm hoping that I just have a bad ground. Not easy to get to it so I'll have to plan an hour or so to do that and double check the sensor distance from the crank.

Again, Thanks.
