The condition of my coupe's center brake light
#1

I just finished installing LED's into my center brake light per Dave G's instructions, and everything went well. (Thanks, Dave!)

I did notice that the light assembly had a lot of corrosion. The tabs coming off the wing are very very rusted, and the entire PCB holding the lamps shows signs of weather damage. Some of the clips which hold the assembly together have failed, as well. I didn't think much of this until I happened to see a photo I'd taken three years ago which showed everything looking very fresh and new.

Is there a gasket or something I'm missing? It seems clear that a lot of water is getting into the assembly. If nothing else I'm afraid the mounting tabs are going to fail completely.

Good show on the conversion!

There is the small white o-ring type gasket that lines the cover plate, but I don't think it is very effective. Of the dozen or so light assemblies I have worked on, almost all of them showed significant corrosion, and some of the retention tabs always snap off.

Yeah... a lousy detail... an assembly with exposed electrical connections that fills with water with every car wash. I actually bought a new assembly (both the red lens and the interior plastic clippy part) but nothing can be done about the exposed terminal screws except swathe them in dielectric grease and hope for the best...

What about using some silicone gasket material to make a complete seal. Perhaps put vasoline or grease on one side so it will not be glued together?
