Delete the air bag's control box
#1

I'm racing a -92 968 i Porsche Club Sweden and have taken the air bags away. The red warning light in the central unit came is lighting. So I thought, take the control box away, it's not used , 475 grams and around 5000$. But the engine does not start. The box has three connectors, blue ,yellow and pink with 6 thiny pins ,in line ,in each. Do you have any suggestions to fix it easy? A Swedish collegue bought a control box from Jason Judd, so if you read this Jason, you might have a solution for me.

Here is a writeup that I believe spells out what you need to do.

Hello,

I don't know if I got the whole 1696 topic, as I don't find the same numbers etc.

The blue connector on the air bag control box goes to a black plastic connector where no. :

1 brown on both sides,

2 empty on air bag box side// red/black on other,

3. black/white // black /white

4 red/black // red/black

5 empty // empty

6 White/black// yellow/red

A white and a blue cable goes to a two pin connector.

What do I do? I'm not an electrician and need some help.

Lamp,

What peaks my curiousity is what you list as #2. The red/black doesn't go to anything. It sounds like someone has already been into the wiring or changed the box. The connector config has changed over the years.

To bypass the airbag controller and forward power to the DME requires installing a jump between #3 & #4. The airbag dash light is on #6.

Generally anyone that's making alterations to the wiring, [especially to the airbag controller] should acquire a schematic for their MY. I found that Porsche made changes just about every year on the 944 in the late 80's. However the 968 is based on the S2 and hasn't changed as much.

As with anything of this nature, verify the suggested connection to make sure it applies to your MY.

....also BTW

The blue/white [2-pin] connection is used for communication from the Diag plug and is in parallel with the DME Diag comm. Used for hammer time... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hi,

It must be wonderful to understand electrics. I have tried to get assistance from Porsche Sweden, but no info. I will disconnect the black 6 pin connector and jump between #3 and 4. What do I do with the rest of the cables from the pink and white connector on the box? Just cut them? Ready then?

Thank for your help! I really appreciate this forum!

Hi,

I did acc. to instructions, the engine started and the red light was out. Havn't tested on street yet, it's winter here. Many thanks for all help!

Anybody who needs a air bag control box, 944.618.217.02?

Lampler, would you mind spelling out more specifically what you did? This thread is confusing. I want to do the same and not have to go to a service center to get my airbag light out.

Thanks!

Thanks!!! (Here's a condensed version of that discussionSmile

• Cut the yellow/red wire on the connector next to the airbag control box, under the dash; behind the glove box.

• Insulate cut ends with liquid electrical tape.

It works: I just did it. Here's a photo of the area: the yellow/red wire appears in the lower right:
