Deep resonating clunking noise..Front bumper not attached!
#1

For the last year or so I was hearing a deep resonating clunking sound every time I hit a good sized bump in the road.  From my perspective in the driver's seat, it sounded like it was coming from the passenger side foot well.   Every so often, I'd raise the car up and go exploring only to find nothing.   Recently, I noticed my front bumper cover was sagging and had dropped to about 1/2 an inch.  The noise started getting worst...

So I reach down through the fresh air feed into the front frame area and felt around in there.   I was able to pull up on something lateral, like a bracket or a beam, and when i let it go - "clunk" - resonated through the frame!!!  I'm thinking YIPPEEE, I found it!

Off comes the front bumper cover (Thanks Flash - http://www.968forums.com/topic/6327-front-bumper-cover-removal/ ) and SHAZAM the problem was manifest.  THE FRONT BUMPER WASN'T BOLTED TO THE CAR!!  Oh my gosh, what if I had ever had to tow the car?  The whole front assembly would have pulled right off!  PREVIOUS OWNERS CAN BE SUCH HUGE SQUIRRELS!!!

Closer examination reveals the welded nuts on the top mounting holes on each are missing.  The bottom nuts on each side are present.  Those things are welded in place so I wonder what happened.  There's no apparent frame damage and my carfax doesn't reveal any accidents.   Oh well...

Now to remount the bumper, bumper cover and enjoy a few miles of clunk free driving!!   EmoticonCar
