Dash buzz
#1

Trying to locate an electrical buzz coming from the dash area, I can't tell whether it is the instrument cluster or elsewhere behind the dash. It is a fixed tone buzz with 2 pitches: under approx 10mph, and above. The noise disappears under road noise as I speed up, but slowing down I can hear it, pitching down right around the 10mph mark, and will keep buzzing a second or two after the engine is shut off.

Weird! Are there relays in the cluster? Could it be the aspirator fan near the HVAC controls (does it have 2 speeds?), or...?

Thanks!

None in the cluster, but the main fuse box is there

The window relay is known to make some strange noises,

Does it only happen with the engine running

The buzz is audible when the motor is turning, it persists and dies down over 2 seconds when shutting. The distinct feature is the change in tone that is corrolated with the 10mph speed point.

Is the fuse box accessible under the dash, driver side? Buzz is definitely not coming from engine bay box.

The box sticks through underneath the dash, there are other relays on the inside

Thanks for taking the time to help guys.

What servos could be at play?

Which reset button? Trip odometer? I never touched it in fear of jamming the working odometer.

The trip counter was a idle speculation

But if it only happens when moving, the speedo motor springs to mind as its the only thing that starts moving when the car does, inside the cabin

Nope the buzz is heard regardless of speed including 0mph, only a shift in tone at 10mph. Wow am I looking forward to announce I found the issue, it'll be a small triumph!

IIRC the radio varies its volume with speed so it gets louder as you speed up, which helps you hear it especially in a Cabriolet. Could this have something to do with the noise you're hearing?

Pull the fuse for the radio and see if the noise goes away?

Best wishes for a successful fix.

If it's bugging you, you could remove and replace appropriate fuses one by one. I can only think of the ac fan which whirs away and could buzz if a bit of insulation tape slipped down onto the blades, but of course there will be many other options. Good luck.
