D1R contemplating "group buy" arrangements
#1

before anybody gets excited, i'm just brainstorming here, and am not committing to this yet.

no matter how much i tried to tell everyone that we were shutting down, and tried to let people order what they wanted before we did, there still seems to be some people late to the game. i cannot reopen operations as they were, as the reasons for closing down still exist. however, there may be a way in the future for some things to be made, and stuff to get to people. here is the idea:

a member could set up a "group buy". they would do all the cat herding and everything associated with purchasing. they would collect all of the orders, and all of the payments. they would then contact me, and i would make whatever it was. i would then ship the entire batch to that person. they would then break it up and ship it out to the individuals.

i have to look, but i am pretty sure minimum quantities of any item are 10 (except clutch hoses which is 20). i will also look at pricing to make sure that is correct.

the upside to the organizer is that their item would be free to them.

this would not include superchargers, tonneau covers, chassis braces, or splitters. those items are off the table. i may figure out how to handle tonneau covers and splitters, but the superchargers and chassis braces are just too much work, and way too time consuming.

Does the guarantee and backup that you have always provided now become the purchasing members responsibility?

i would still provide the same manufacturer's warranty against defect. i will not be making myself available via this or any forum type website. my email will still work, and i will be available there for any product related questions, though most pre-sale queries will be directed to the organizer, who will have been instructed regarding the appropriate threads. they will be responsible for checking the completeness of the orders, and any issues would then be handled through them to me.

all of this is designed to remove me from the retail process, yet provide some mechanism for people to get what they want down the road. as i said, i am not committed to this yet, and i'm not sure it's the right answer, but i am thinking about it. it allows me the same quality control, but removes the hassles. by limiting things to batches like this, it also minimizes the time i would have to spend on anything.

Sounds good Flash. There are still a couple of D1R items I hadn't purchased before the cutoff.

So are you growing your business by bringing on salesman?

nope. not interested in growing the business. this is purely a mechanism to provide something that people want, without me having to deal with it as much as in the past. it may or may not ever happen. it's not easy to gather 10 people, get their money, answer their questions, and then ship out their stuff. i'm not sure how many people would ever be willing to do it.

hence the reason i said "contemplating"

Hi Flash, I'm raising my hand to help in any way I can if you feel it will move you towards the "group buy" decision.

And, to add to this, while I'm new to this board, I used to be on the R.L. boards occasionally, mostly in the 928 area. This 968 coupe that I bought from Ryker is my 2nd 968 and my 3rd Porsche. If it would help to get things flowing, I would be happy to serve as the group buy organizer.

This is me

Armed with a commercial shipping address, FedEx account, and a business already in place, I would be up for being the cat herder.......

Do you have any experience in herding thrifty, procrastinating and opinionated cats?

Hi Flash, I was just checking back in on this topic to see if you had a sense of what you may/may not want to do on group buys, etc...

It sounds like there has already been some interest in being a sheep herder, but I'd be happy to be an alternate if those don't pan out. I have experience shipping vehicle parts and installing many of the D1R items.
