Contemplating New Products
#1

Now that I am able to focus a bit more on things, I am thinking about the projects I either sidelined or just haven't gotten to. There is obviously an endless list of things, but many of them are impractical. I have already put a lot of thought into a number of them though, and in fact already have prototypes of some of them.

Things I won't be doing:

Anything brake related. The liability is just too high. If something ever failed, I'd lose the house. I always wanted lighter rotors that used the same calipers, and I may do it for my own car, but I will not be reproducing them.

Clear turn signal lenses. I just don't like them, and I am not going to participate in making the car look japanese.

Headlight conversion. I've seen all of the attempts, and it's just too costly to be practical. I don't like the look of anything set in vertically, and there is no other light that looks right in our existing fender. I don't want to replace it with something other than steel for a street car either. Unlike a race car, where you have new tubing to take that load, as the fender is part of the body structure in a unibody car like ours, and adds rigidity. Replacing it with something fiberglass or carbon would weaken the front end and make it feel less solid.

Higher boost or output Supercharger Kit. This is a recipe for disaster, and I want no part of it.

Things coming out soon:

Headlight bucket repair kit.

Glove box door repair kit.

Rear Shock Coil-Over Kit

Battery Relocation Kit

Firewall Repair Kit

Things I am seriously thinking about:

Replicating my splitter

Upper strut mount bearings

Stiffer Strut Tower Brace to work with new upper strut mount bearings. The OEM units are incapable of handling more load, hence the designed in .005" of lateral flex in the existing Strut Brace. By replacing the upper bearings with new ones with new hardware, a stiffer brace could be mounted. This would be for race only, and would cause damage on a street car.

Front Upper Grill

Front Lower Grill

Front Trailer Hooks

Rear Tow Hook (race car application)

Front Tow Hook (race car application)

Removable Hard Top

Larger Sway Bars

Other thoughts???

thanks guys, but i think we're screwed on those - the costs would be higher than just buying what is already out there

clear sunroof - not a chance unless it was plastic - tempered glass is extremely expensive to make, and there just won't be enough people to justify that - plastic is possible, but the curvatures requiring a mold, and the hardware required would likely be at least as expensive as a saratoga top

replaceable rear cab window - anything i could do would be half-assed at best - the problem is in the installation - you really have to sew it in, and that requires removal of the top - at that point, you may as well just replace it - anything that could be bonded in would ultimately come apart - a tip to determining if your top needs replacing is that the stitching on all blue and black tops is black - it is not grey or white - if your stitching has faded, your top canvas is also faded - it is also likely quite brittle, and would not hold up well to a repair

A bellhousing for Tip cars similar to the one on manual cars that would make changing the damper easier?

Ashtray to smart phone replacement kit, coupe cargo net, enhanced/best coupe radio antenna replacement kit, dashboard gauge lamp replacement kit, airbox mod kit, classic grey browning repair kit, rear hatch delamination repair kit, daytime driving light kit, 3rd brake light-to-LED kit, sharkfin seal replacement kit, (most will come with a good set of instructions)

And then perhaps resell the preferred/best aftermarket items: preferred cup holders, seat covers, preferred air compressor, triage and spares kit (HCV, relays, etc.) perhaps packaged with blink-test readout instructions and required "cheap" tools for on-the-road repair,

Yes, these aren't really performance upgrades, but it would enrich Design 1 as the go-to place for best-in-class repairs / enhancements for other common upgrades / annoyance fixes that many owners undertake. Even though instructions and suggestions for many of these are on the forum, many people like to just buy the packaged/proven kit with all the required stuff.

Not sure of the design, but it would be great to have some kind of protector bar (or something) for the lower front bumper cover so we don't damage the lower grille and batwing (front apron) when we carelessly drive too far forward and hit a curb or some other object.

What I really need is a large vehicle repellent system: no matter how far out in the parking lot I leave the car, it seems that 90% of the time I come out of the store with a giant pickup truck on one side and a giant SUV on the other side.

I like the idea of replicating your splitter. I've always thought that the splitter finished off the front of the car nicely and certainly something I'd consider when done right

Flash,

I like the ideas and what you are planning soon.

I think it would be cool to see some bundled packages, front and rear suspension, supercharger and suspension, etc. I'm as low as possible, so probably any splitter will do just that...split!

Larger rear sway sounds good to me as well, with more adjustability, and maybe a package to address "everthing rear", suspension-wise.

It would also be nice to have a kit to mount some guages in the center console, for temps and such. That would be great. I'd like to have some exact values to look at.

If I had the coin, I'd be going deep into the braces you already have for sale. You have excellent offerings.

Thanks for the effort!

Definitely the front splitter.

Rear shock coil-over kit needs a front buddy too - complete, "agressive street", coilover kit for 2012 please.

Aside from a Canton has anyone ever tried to relocate the oil filter? An adapter and SS braided hose to a nicer location under the car?

A full set of mini-guages/sensors/wiring with mounting plate (you already have)?

Gear shift knob that won't buzzz

Rear seat delete kit

Better antenna/boost amp

Lexan hatch

Trunk lock cover

Keyless entry. Yes you can buy a Biulldog but the instructions suck and for the novice it is very confusing on how to wire/buy/mount the relays.

Great stuff - definitely looking forward to many of the items, particularly the battery relo kit, and the larger sway bars.

One question about the strut brace - I understand we need the current strut brace to be able to utilize the firewall brace, which I need pretty urgently, and I would like to buy and install it while my engine is out. But if the new strut tower brace (which I'm also interested in) isn't ready for, say, a few months, could I buy the current brace, and then "trade it in" on the new one?

As far as other items, there are many good suggestions here. The only one I would add, but doubt that it would be practical, would be a lightweight hood (don't care if it's made of carbon fiber, fiberglass, aluminum, titanium, or snail-slime reinforced paper mache) that fits decently.

Thanks for the effort - checkbook is at the ready!

I like the direction this is going in...

Of those items, these would be on my immediate "wish" list:

1 - splitter

2 - removable hard top

3 - front upper & lower grills

4 - ashtray to phone kit

5 - LED 3rd brake light kit

6 - cup holder kit

Another vote for a removable hardtop, though I don't know if anything can be done about the height of the lowered soft top and the resultant vision restriction. And cup holders are always appreciated. How about a wind deflector that you don't have to remove and re-install to put the top down?

My 2 cents :

focus first on things that are Not made by other sources.

1. a repair process for the &^$$@ rear hatch glass.

2. a good track type front splitter.

3. a replacement dash pad

the front splitter i have has survived multiple bashes - the paso robles fun run saw a half dozen really good ones with no real damage

ash tray - not likely - since decks now offer direct dialing from the deck, i recommend putting the phone in the console, your pocket or the glove box and using the deck make and receive calls

dashboard gauge lamps - i like them as they are, and will not be doing that - dim is better - bright is bad - there are already brighter bulbs available anyway

front strut kit - as i said, there is already stuff out there that there is no way i could compete with - the rear is a different story, as the only thing out there is gas, which i feel does not work well on our cars

antennas and such will not be on my list - development would be ridiculous

same goes for the hatch issues - somebody else is going to have to work on that one

i like the stock gear shift knob - the shape is perfect for correct shifting technique

i already have a gauge plate for mounting gauges below the deck - thanks for reminding me to put it up on the site though - the gauges are available already, and i wouldn't be able to do much in the way of getting them cheaper - the wiring is very easy - i can certainly put up a "how to" though on what wires to tap

i won't be doing any body panels at all

trunk lock cover is a price pfister faucet cover - 39 cents at your local hardware store

cupholder - 9xauto makes a great one

bellhousing - how many times do you want to replace that dampener? since you'd have to remove everything to install the bellhousing, the likelihood of taking advantage of it again would be minimal

but keep them coming

By removable hard top, do you mean a hard top that would go on a Cabriolet?

+1 on the splitter. A hatch rebuild kit would be nice. I think Ive gotten down a method to do it. I could do a write up when I do the 952 hatch. Any of the suspension upgrades I may be interested in. Battery relocation kit too. Id be interested in a clear sunroof even in lexan, if its done well. Id pay used saratoga prices for something new in lexan. Seems like it could be pulled off nice.

A stiffer strut tower brace would be welcome. Deflection in brace doesn't actually resolve movement in strut tower..

Both 951 Turbo Cup cars and 968TS had a solid brace between towers with O.E. Strut bearings.

If you resolve tower movement, bearings only need to absorb strut shaft rotational load and noise without flex of chassis.
