Dropped my car off at Rollcentre Racing this morning for the cage welding in.



At last!



Because of the MSA rules in the UK, I cannot have the rear backstays reching beyond the rear suspension pickup points.



Bummer!



There goes my RS replica idea.



Oh well, at least I got to look round the Dallara LMP900 and Mosler race cars there.



You may recognise the team name from this years LeMans 24 hours where Martin raced the Dallara.

that sucks for more reasons that that - i guess they don't want you stiffening up the chassis that much



some rules, in an attempt to keep things on a level playing field, really don't make sense



question, if it was an RS, and it had those stays, would you get bumped?

I am not a happy bunny.



I have put that question to Martin who really knows his stuff so we will have to see.



If you get 911 Porsche World magazine you may remember a white UK clubsport that had a cage that didn't go past the rear suspension at the back.



I always wondered why it was like that and now I know.



I wish I was American FULL STOP.

Basically it would not be eligible for any UK MSA competition (everything really) and any FIA based event as well I think as the MSA take there rules from the FIA

really? and that is where they raced them when new, right? so they have since then disqualified them for racing? are they allowed in vintage?

Doubt it though as the MSA is pretty strict and Martin said that it would probably have to be modified to race.



I think it is a safety thing.



It pisses me off.



I'm gonna end up with a stumpy cage like Eric's pictures of the blue car.

i'm just a bit confused - out here (in SCCA anyway) on a car like that (factory race car) anything that was approved, at the time the car was originally campaigned, gets grandfathered in as approved for subsequent racing - to be clear, if the car, when raced by the factory, came with that cage, then subsequently that cage is approved - as long as it still meets or exceeds safety standards, any other consideration is moot



you may well have a good case with the board, but you'd have to show that it was approved before, and you duplicated it exactly - you'd also have to follow the "replica" idea pretty closely, in order to support the argument, though i have seen some variations on the theme in vintage racing out here

That's the thing, because the cage goes over the rear suspension pick up points they say that it is not safe and thus no longer eligable.

hmmm - interesting - i wonder why - i can't envision why it would be unsafe - i'd look for some kind of explanation - to make a rule change like that, which would disqualify cars, they would need to have a real reason



does that mean that the real rs cars have to remove those pieces, making them no longer authentic?



definitely sounds like some homework to do

Decided that I have no choice and have to go with an FIA spec cage like the blue car afterall.



According to Martin at Rollcentre it is a stiffer design anyway due to the fact that it goes to the rear wheel arch.



He can't understand why it goes to the back (I think it looks a lot better!)



I suppose I'll have to live with it
