Covid keeping you down
#21

Ed, excellent post , thank you for that !!!!

As for Waylander’s “bloody anti vaxers are beyond stupid and illogical “ statement : YES they are , and even that’s an understatement ! And the worst among them are those who politicize this. I won’t shed a tear, and as a matter of fact I’ll rejoice if they all perish.. and that includes relatives or friends .. we’ll, I don’t have any idiot friends, but I do have a couple of relatives ( you can’t choose your family ) who are stubborn morons.

We’ll be over this as well, eventually .. but with millions and millions of delusional people living in denial , it’s going to take a while …

First of all, I'm glad to see Waylander appears to have made a solid recovery from his bout with Covid. I haven't posted here in awhile, as it looks like I'm about the only one here who uses his 968 almost exclusively as a track car, so I don't have a whole lot in common, 968-wise, with most people here, so I don't have a lot to add to most of the threads, although I do enjoy reading many of them.

Inkedupfatboy, I couldn't agree with you more. The development of the Covid vaccine inarguably ranks as one of the greatest achievements in human history, and it sickens me to hear even the slightest opposition to it. How it ever became a political issue is beyond comprehension. Covid is a vicious common enemy that should be unifying the nation (and the world), not dividing it, and we need to cooperatively use every possible measure against it, including the vaccines, masks, natural immunity, antiviral treatments, and any other credible options (I'm not talking about nonsense like horse dewormer). Already had Covid, and pulled through it OK? Great, but why not supplement whatever natural immunity you have attained by going ahead and also getting the vaccine, or the booster if you've already had your first two rounds? Not taking all proven measures ensures dragging this nightmare on indefinitely, and risks having to return to lockdowns. Ideally, everyone would have the sense to do the right things(s) on their own, but sadly, this is clearly not even close to being the case. At the very least, anyone requiring hospitilization for Covid who is unvaccinated should immediately have their health insurance cancelled. Ran up a 7-figure bill after two months in the ICU? Too bad, so sad. It's called personal responsibility. Think the vaccine and masking is a "personal choice"? Try telling that to our heroic healtcare workers working around the clock to save your sorry ass when you clog up our hospitals thanks to your selfish actions or inactions. Sorry if this offends anyone, but the degree of idiocy in the response to the pandemic makes my head spin. Had we done the right things from the start, Covid would be a low-level nuisance by now.

I agree with a lot of that for sure.

Unfortunately, it's not illegal to not vaccinate your kids. I think they still can't attend public school unless they have proof of vaccinations, but I am not sure.

People underplay the role Mr. Trump had in getting the ball rolling with the vaccines and the ventilator productions. If you want to disagree that's fine. It's a free country. Yes, the politics really put us behind the 8-ball on getting everyone vaccinated and getting a handle on this. I still don't understand it or how it happened. Yes there were time he should have listened to his advisors and shut his mouth. To say this is a Trump VS Biden issue demeans us all. It's much bigger.

Social media was/is also a huge blame. It links people in ways never before available, and I personally think it should be destroyed in it's current form. (obviously this is a bit of a different forum) I am not on facebook or tic tok or instagram and the things that people tell me they see there, makes me glad I am not there. The amount of dis-information and propaganda (yes, it's propaganda every bit as nasty as what was done during the wars in my opinion) online and in the so-called news media should not be allowed to exist. Perhaps even criminalized. People like Tucker Carlson and his ilk, are not news programs. They are opinion/propaganda plain and simple. Dan Rather/Walter Cronkite, that was news.

There is a difference between having an opinion and expressing it and downright providing dangerous content/information that gets people hurt or killed.

It is much harder to market my business without social media, but I am strong in my resolve that I won't use them.

Again, to have to pay for your care if you are not vaccinated, falls under the same heading as you can't make me vaccinate my kids, or you can't make me get a shot I don't want in order to keep my job. I see how the arguments work. Personally I think times of national safely should take precedence over certain rights sometimes in what is basically a national emergency. Far less people died on 911 than from covid (and they are still dying), and we went way down the rabbit hole giving our government powers they shouldn't have had in the first place, and should have relinquished by now. In Florida, it's legal to ride a motorcycle helmet-less, but you are required to carry at least 10K in major medical insurance I believe. I don't see how that is much different than being made to carry the financial responsibility if you catch covid as an un-vaccinated person (providing that the vaccine was not detrimental to your heath as a reason for not being vaccinated).

My wife had to get a Hepatitis shot when she went to work for the hospital. Sometimes we have to do things we don't like for our greater good later.

Science should always trump opinion, especially when it's right.

I am doing everything I can, not to catch this. This may prove futile in the end, but I haven't fought the good fight for two years to lose now. People don't understand that the division of labor in our home is that my wife goes to work, and this pays our bills and provides our living & I do everything else. So even having the flu puts me behind the 8-ball as far as getting things done, even getting groceries, and I can't afford to be sick again with something serious. I fought cancer for a year. I had a 50% chance of living 5 years after treatment. I am not going to willingly let some moron who thinks covid is a scam get me sick to the point where I could die. Not happening and I will call them on it.

Stay safe. Happy New Year.

Amen to that !!!

as a side note , I think “talking heads” the likes of Tucker Carlson , Alex Jones, etc. , don’t actually believe a single word they spew out ; it’s all about ratings and the money that comes with it ..they’re little more than agitators , and snake oil salesmen . Social Media might be be excusable and unavoidable because every Tom , Dick and Harry ( mostly DICKs ) can post an opinion which may influence others, but it’s sad that the even the current mainstream media sucks; there is little to no integrity in reporting - bias and sensationalism is what sells !

Remember, the news media is actually owned by very few people - it's just brands of a product -

When that's the case, it's all an agenda.

Let’s not forget the Chinese gave us Covid not the unvaccinated, social media or tucker. I see little mention of this fact in any news source. Want accountability? China must pay for the harm they have inflicted on the world. Until the world acknowledges this we remain susceptible to being dosed again.

Point the finger of blame where it squarely belongs. I’m not sure I agree condemning people to illness or bankruptcy if they are non vaccers is an appropriate response. This means we all end up paying more for it. Charge their policies extra like life and disability insurers due for smokers. While I don’t understand the refusal to get vaccinated, as a American I understand your right to make that choice. While I don’t like the idea of presenting a vaccination card ( identity papers) to enter a building I see it as a possible way to change behavior. Of course once we slide down this rabbit hole there is little chance of retuning.

Why there is not a worldwide rage against China baffles me.

I use my common sense to stay away from people places and things that I don’t like or feel unsafe around This is a better way of dealing with this issue of those who don’t conform to what we believe is right or wrong. Wishing ill upon those who don’t agree with you is a negativity that demeans and lowers oneself. Bad karma also. Don’t get me wrong, I have many of the same feelings evidenced above.

Totally agree with you about China .

Totally disagree with this statement “ While I don’t understand the refusal to get vaccinated, as a American I understand your right to make that choice.“. No, no, no ! No one has the right to make a choice when your choice endangers others’ lives !

Do I have the choice to kill someone I suspect or know is unvaccinated and may carry the virus who doesn’t wear a mask and gets within six feet of me, as an act of self-defense ?

I agree this was something that got out of hand, and I believe it was likely something that was looked at to be militarized. Just my opinion.

I don't' think we will ever learn the truth. Look at all the petty dictators that we have fought against. Our government is responsible for funding many of them and even putting them in power and it bites us in the arse every time. I feel our government or at least Fauci (Don't trust him & don't like him) knew about it and what was happening with it and they know exactly where is started.

I have no issue calling it the Wuhan virus. Many diseases have been named after where they initiated. Look at Legionnaires' Disease.

I also stay away from others still. I rarely only go out with a specific mission in mind other than being open at my store.

We have not been to a restaurant for over 2 years now, and I have to say I have gotten to be a much better cook for it. I don't miss it.

I look at it like DUI. If you drink, get drunk and drive your car on your large expansive acreage, you won't hurt anyone but yourself when you slam into the tree or roll over in the ditch, but as soon as you go out on the highway where other people are, you are in an entirely different situation and endangering the lives of others. Now you made it my problem. As I said, there are times where the greater good trumps personal rights, however I do agree that this is indeed a very slippery slope, especially when applied to other rights/freedoms.

There is no easy answer.

Stay safe everyone - I have a feeling this is a preview of something worse. I hope I am wrong.

Ed

On another note, isn't there someone in this country who could make computer chips to put in cars? What's up with this? Seriously though, you can tie it all conspiratorially together - Obama's cash for clunkers gets rid of all old cars & parts - Chinese wipe everyone out with virus, supply & labor shortages = product shortages, new green deal forces everyone to buy electric cars and politicians and governments reap the benefits because they are all invested in the tech. It's easy to connect it all together and in 15 years we are all speaking mandarin.

Strangely enough, I have just had a kitchen base unit replaced under the sink, on pulling it out there was a pack of antibacterial wipes on the floor, that had managed to fall out the back of the rotting unit

The use by date was may 2017, but in the list of things they were effective against was Coronavirus

So its been around for a long time, but not in the weaponised form it is now

Don't forget that SARS-CoV was also a coronavirus. The wipes may have been developed for that.

Similar antivirus has been around since 2002 which is why this version of the AV was so quickly developed and approved, a lot of the ground work had been done for SARS and then MERS.

I also totally agree that the entire world should be doing a lot more to hold China accountable for what they have unleashed on humanity. They should be put on trial, and should owe the rest of the world trillions in retributions. Also, it is unconscionable that every single person entering our country, legally or illegally, isn't immediately forced to get vaccinated. Again, we need to use very tool in the toolbox to combat this pandemic.

As far as the personal freedoms argument, I think the expression, "Your right to swing your arm ends at the tip of my nose" applies. If this were a vaccine against, say, cancer, I would agree it is 100% a personal decision. But it's a vaccine against a highly contagious and unpredictable virus designed to keep people from getting hospitalized and dying, and it works brilliantly, so I have zero issues with having vaccination be a requirement to work, and to enter any public venue. Dr. Fauci, who in my opinion is a national treasure, nailed it when he said, when the vaccines were first available, that this was going to be a race between the vaccines and the variants. Unfortunately, thanks to the knuckle-dragging "vaccine hesitant" morons, we lost miserably, which has prolonged this nightmare probably ultimately by years.

"On another note, isn't there someone in this country who could make computer chips to put in cars? What's up with this?"

I just caught this in your post. I work in the semiconductor industry (I'm a process engineer), in a facility that makes chips primarily for cars, and let me tell you, we are in all-hands-on-deck, pull-out-all-the-stops mode to increase production as fast as humanly possible. All levels, from engineers up to senior management, are taking turns helping transport product in the factory, we're being asked to come in on weekends to support the factory floor, contests, prizes, factory expansion, anything and everything to produce more, and I'm sure every chip factory on the planet is doing the same thing. Demand was already outstripping capacity before Covid hit, and then entire industry thought Covid's impact on demand would last much longer than it did, so everybody scaled way back on production, so now we're playing catch-up. But I think it's more than just Covid - I think we collectively grossly underestimated the strength of the American economy. We'll catch up eventually (and hopefully not end up with the mother of all chip gluts, forcing mass layoffs), but it's probably going to take another year or more. So no conspiracies, just the laws of supply and demand at work.

Are you sure you're not making chips to inject into people so they can be tracked and followed around all day and made to behave as government/big brother wants? Big Grin Big Grin Sorry, just being mischievous!

I read in UK that the brother of the previous leader of the opposition (Corbin) has just lead a raid on a testing facility with the purpose of destroying equipment. ... It was on video, so I hope a good few will end up in jail cf those who invaded the White House.

I appreciate the tone and consideration on this forum and this topic. Everyone has vastly different opinions on things, and it has been a pleasant discourse that hasn't dropped to a level of poor sportsmanship or bad behavior. Thanks.

I disagree with you on Fauci. I think he is one of the most dangerous men we have seen in this country in a long time. His flip flopping caused many more deaths than were necessary & I also think he was well informed on what this was and where it came from even before it broke loose. I think in the future it will be brought to light that he had far more involvement in this disaster than people realize. I don't like or trust him. If you think otherwise that's your prerogative. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a hand in engineering this disaster. Another thing that many people in this country don't realize is just how much the world watches our news and media and how it makes us appear to other citizens in other counties. I visit several blogs from Europe and we are not always thought of in a positive light for sure. They see our infighting and it doesn't make us look good.

On the other note, it is good to see the perspective on the computer chips. But it seems like things should start turning around faster than it has. (One thing I am afraid of is that the inflated prices we are experiencing due to shortages will not reduce once things catch up. Too many companies are too money hungry to let it go.) However much that companies have benefited from "just in time production" originally developed by Totyota, these shortages are a perfect example of how it can fail. The shortage of one component can stall the production of something that contains anywhere from a few parts to thousands. Another problem that this type of production can't deal with well is hoarding by consumers. I still don't understand the toilet paper hoarding. I also don't like it when companies and businesses act like profiteers. Just because ammo is short, doesn't make it right to double or triple the price because there is someone who is desperate enough to pay it. I don't have a problem of limiting quantities to persons so everyone gets a chance to buy some, but to price scalp people is wrong.

I do all the shopping for the household. I didn't/don't take more than my share. Early in the pandemic, I saw people in our local Publix store where I shop fighting over a package of ground beef. My wife makes a good living for us, so I often bought more expensive things so that less expensive options were left for people that who were living paycheck to paycheck would find things they could afford when the shelves got thin. We tried new foods/products that we normally didn't use & we found more we liked and put in the win column than we thought we would. I am still seeing shortages on the shelves. Canned cat food is nearly impossible to find down here and we feed several feral cats. Supposedly they can't find some of the ingredients they need to make it.

I haven't seen Peter Pan whipped peanut butter or diet Barg's rootbeer in over 2 years. I don't know if they are ever going to bring it back. I think this virus is going to have many long term effects that we will not have anticipated for sure.

I have learned one immutable thing from this pandemic, and that is I can't trust other people to "Do the right thing".

On another note, I must have decided to keep the car for a while longer as I just ordered new shocks/struts & sway bar bushings for it. Further down the rabbit hole we go. Haggerty better be right about the future value of these cars.

Stay safe!

True , you can’t blame Donald Trump for causing Covid , no more than you can blame George W Bush for SARS , no more than you can blame Dwight Eisenhower for the Asian Flu pandemic, no more than you can blame Bill Clinton for causing the Herpes spread…oh, wait , ok maybe just a few hundred “ cold sores “ to which he might have contributed .. Tongue ..

I can still blame Trump for telling his 75 million brainless lemmings that Covid is a hoax, and nothing more than a common cold, arguably causing the death of hundreds of thousands of Americans who listened to the crap spewing out of his mouth. And I can blame Carlson, Jones, and all the ultra-right talking heads for gaslighting which only caused more illness and death by those listening to them.. again, no big loss if all those science deniers , “ it’s my right and freedom “ boneheads , flat earth society folks , religious nut jobs , all perished, but starting with Trump along with all of his gaslight cronies should be tried , convicted and imprisoned for life, by the state for crimes against humanity ..IMHO .

Ah! You're on to us! The real reason for the chip shortage is that all the chips that would nornally go into cars are going into vaccines instead Big Grin

Actually, I'm surprised some conspiracy obsessed whacko hasn't already thrown this out on social media. Actually, somebody probably has...

Damn, yes you’re definitely on to us “capitalist pigs” taking advantage of, and profiting from the supply and demand principles when it comes to chips ..and just Ike Cloud9..68, I’m also an employee of a company which happens to be a mega-semiconductor enterprise, whose financial results have been extraordinary as a result of this shortages … ( and it lined my pockets very nicely, thank you .).

Whenever I read stuff like this, I always search for the face-palm emoji, but this is the closest thing we have: Huh

The statement that masks don't work is simply idiotic, and defies the evidence that's right in front of everybody's face: What's the one venue where massive numbers of people, regardless of vaccination status, are crammed into close quarters for up to 18 consecutive hours or more, and yet there has never to my knowledge been a single Covid spreading incident at one of these locations? I'm talking about airports and airplanes, of course. What's the one thing every airport and airplane in the world has in common? Everybody in one has to wear a mask! I hate wearing one as much as anyone, and obviously they're not 100% effective, but only a nitwit would say they don't help.
