coupe third brake light
#1

Replaced all my bulbs with sylvania 73s and hooked it all back up... turned the parking lights on and bulb 2 and 5 were out. (counting from the wired side) slapped it around a few times and they came on but bulb 6 and 7 went out. took it apart and cleaned the contacts with a dremel sander and then put it all back together nice and tight and bulb 3 was out. smacked it again and it came on... now it should stay that way until i hit a pebble on I95 or heaven forbid decide to use my hatchback space... any fixes out there? i came across a few older threads about an led conversion and pm'ed the guy but haven't heard anything and didn't know if he was still active. if all else fails im looking for a known working third brake light assembly...

If I had that problem, which I am sure I will one day, I would be in there so fast with a soldering iron, some red superbrights and a limit resistor - permanent fix. Oh, and a beer as this is a sunny, Sunday morning thing with the tunes up.

Hope to squeeze a 993 in there before I die as well. Should have the mortgage, the VISA and the university (2 kids, one done) paid off by then

I had a very similar issue. Replaced with new bulbs, two would not light. Then purchased super bright leds from company of the same name, took it apart, pushed the contacts closer together, and well, really nice. All light up, very bright, a good upgrade.

That's funny. I'm going through the same thing right now. I had one bulb out and then pulled it apart and cleaned the contacts. Now I have two bulbs out. One bulb is definately bad, the rest other is just a finicky contact.

I like the LED idea. If I don't get this resolved next weekend, I might give those a try.

I agree. No more bulb burn outs.
I went a step further and since the red LED's are clear, I made a new lens in clear instead of the OEM red.

He probably snagged the lens off a fluorescent fixture cover.

PorscheDude,

I used the red lens as a model and poured a silicon mold.
Used clear resin to make a perfect clear lens.

looking at my post now, that looked sarcastic... i actually threw away what i had left from a previous project...

so an update now. they all work fine through no fault of my own... they just do... but now all of my brake lights stay on (including the third brake light) when i turn my lights on.... whether i am touching the brakes or not... however with the lights off, they go off and come on properly when i touch the pedal... Does anybody have a copy of the 968 Engineering procedure to convert these over? I replaced the burned out bulb and the rest just go on and off when I hit a bump.

I'm doing the the LED conversion. It would be nice to have that write up.
