I think I know the answer to this, but I just want to bounce it off the collective wisdom of the esteemed 968 forums community. The owners manual says to use ATF Dexron (I thought it was spelled "Dextron"), but of course Dextron has gone through several revisions over the years. And, there are both synthetic and natural versions. I believe ATF III is the correct stuff to use, as it has replaced ATF II. Is this correct? There is an ATF IV, but I believe this is recommended for a relatively small number of specific cars, including Chryslers and Toyotas, though I may be wrong about this.

Anyway, does anybody know which ATF is recommended for the power steering? I'm guessing it's Dextron ATF III synthetic. I just want to suck out and replace mine as a preventative measure; I don't have any issues with my steering, just thought it would be a good idea after 17+ years... Thanks.

Just Dexron III, I wouldn't use synthetic in there, it's hard enough to keep the thing from leaking with all fresh seals and hoses. The thicker the oil it seems the better, so I'd just stick with the normal dino oil.
