Cooling fans "racing"
#1

Just replaced the battery today and then and went out for a nice Sunday drive. After I parked the car and and got out I heard the cooling fans do something which has never happened in all the time I have owned the car ( approx 12 years ) ; they were " revving up " and then slowing, revving up and the slowing again, and this m.o. repeated for a couple of minutes until they turned off. The revving part took about 5 or 6 seconds the slowing down part about 2 seconds, and all this at very consistent repeating intervals. After driving home later on, this happened again. So I called Bob and got some tips on what to check - the ballast resistors wires/ connections , next to the battery - they looked firmly in place and clean but I cleaned them up further and used some of the CRC electrical contact spray nonetheless. If that does not resolve the issue, I understand the next culprit could be the cooling fans relay ( I also removed that one and sprayed some contact cleaner there just for the heck of it. ). I'll see what happens the next time I take it out for a drive, and post a follow up if the problem persists. In the meantime I thought I should RELAY the incident :-) just as a FYI in case others have had this happened and can chime in with solutions ..

Had a relay stick on my 944 that caused the fans to stay on. Changed the relay and no fan issues since.

ds,

Had the opposite problem, only the low speed fan would come on. A call to Pelican Parts and $144.00 (+-) for a new relay and the problem was solved.

It would be interesting to know how / why the new battery triggered this ( assuming I did not somehow touch those ballast resistor wires during install and caused a contact issue ) so maybe the greater voltage of a new battery is causing the relay to act up differently ? It's the first time this happened and I replaced at least three batteries in the 968 , but I guess with electrical components ( aka gremlins ) there is no rhyme or reason as to when they decide to act up ..

this is a common issue. people continually try to connect the dots between one thing and another. it rarely works that way, at least not in the way they think it will.

it is possible you dislodged the ballast resistor wiring in the process of changing the battery.

it is possible that the increase in current, and/or better ground from a fresh connection, altered how the ballast resistors are working.

the relay could have taken a dump. this would not be affected by the battery change though.

do not touch the relay. clean the ballast resistor connections. see if the condition continues.

if it does, then mess with the relay.

After you've done your due diligence with the ballast resistor you might try swapping the relay from your other car.

good idea. thanks.

see, and some of you wondered why I bought a spare 968 .. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Update : the resistor contacts looked clean and securely in place , so unplugged the relay, I sprayed some CRC electrical contact cleaner, plugged it back in and.....the fans are now working just as they should . I wonder if it's just one of those gremlins that acted up one time for no apparent reason and the returned to normal all on its own, or if my taking out the relay and putting it back in caused it to reset somehow.

Sometimes things like that happen. My lights were'nt turning on consistently at one point, so I took out the rotary switch in the dashboard, to check for continuity across the various connectors as described in the wiring diagram. I didn't physically do anything to it, but when I put it back, it started working. That was nearly a year ago, and it's worked perfectly ever since.

sounds like you had dirty contacts on the relay. VERY common. these should all be removed and cleaned once a year. same for the fuses. be aware though that if you pull the radio fuse, you will likely lose the memory on the deck.

even the process of removing and plugging back in a fuse, relay, or whatever, essentially "cleans" the contact as the metal scrapes against metal, and leaves a "clean spot"

On Monday my other 968 cooling fans decided they would just continue on and on and on and on after the engine was turned off. So I waited to see if they would eventually stop. I hung around for a while, made a call or two, checked some emails , and maybe five minutes later checked again. Nope, they were still going . So I unplugged the relay and set it aside while I was at work, then put it back in on the drive home, and as soon as I got there I sprayed the relay pins and the "'ports" they go into with CRC electrical cleaner. Tuesday and today they worked as they should, so I think the problem is fixed..fingers crossed ..
