Clear Coat or no?
#1

1992 Grand Prix white coupe...does this car have a clear coat or not? It seems that different surfaces of the car react differently the the polish and wax application. For example, the horizontal surfaces shine much easier than the vertical surfaces, which makes little sense. Typically vertical surfaces shine easier as they have less direct contact with the sun. (I realize the bumpers are going to always react differently since they are plastic) It sure acts like a non-clear coat car. The car only has 31k on the clock and has always been garaged, so there's no paint damage to speak of.

So anyone know one way or the other?

This may seem like a stupid question but I know BMW had some colors in the 90s that weren't clear coat. Red for example. Thanks in advance for the info.

i do not believe the original paint had clear coat on solid colors - the horizontal surfaces may have been buffed - this would make them take a shine more easily - typically somebody selling a car would buff those, and it is very common to leave the sides alone

Chris,

Take a look at this thread: "This is one of the big advantages of Grand Prix White: it's tough as nails and has no clearcoat to deal with." http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=120. Not sure how Etnier knew there is no clearcoat but sounds conclusive to me.

Or do search on the site with word "clearcoat" and there are other discussions.

However here is an example of misleading information, or unclear information -- ya really have to be careful about vendor sites sometimes: http://www.paintscratch.com. There is a comment that says "3) Most colors before 1980 were single stage colors. Most paint formulas after 1980 are basecoat/clearcoat paints and another that says "All vehicles made past 1986 will need a coat of clear ..." here http://www.paintscratch.com/clearinfo.htm. On this site when you select paint products for 1992 Porsche Grand Prix White it automatically adds the clearcoat. But the list of 1992 Porsche colors below have some colors annotated with clearcoat and others not.

Of course you can always do a test by using a dark applicator or towel, apply a small amount of polish or paint cleaner, and work into the surface. If the color transfers onto your towel or applicator, you know you have single stage paint.

I agree that the solid colors were not clear coated, but I have no way to verify. I have Grand Prix White as well and there is no clear coat on mine. Some panels have been resprayed but there is at least one, maybe two that appear to be original. I just got finished with a complete very meticulous detail of the car - first time since I've owned it - and the paint really came out nice. I had to have something to do while my instrument cluster was out for repair! I'll post of some pics in a gallery for those interested.
