Chris,
Take a look at this thread: "This is one of the big advantages of Grand Prix White: it's tough as nails and has no clearcoat to deal with."
http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=120. Not sure how Etnier knew there is no clearcoat but sounds conclusive to me.
Or do search on the site with word "clearcoat" and there are other discussions.
However here is an example of misleading information, or unclear information -- ya really have to be careful about vendor sites sometimes:
http://www.paintscratch.com. There is a comment that says "3) Most colors before 1980 were single stage colors. Most paint formulas after 1980 are basecoat/clearcoat paints and another that says "All vehicles made past 1986 will need a coat of clear ..." here
http://www.paintscratch.com/clearinfo.htm. On this site when you select paint products for 1992 Porsche Grand Prix White it automatically adds the clearcoat. But the list of 1992 Porsche colors below have some colors annotated with clearcoat and others not.
Of course you can always do a test by using a dark applicator or towel, apply a small amount of polish or paint cleaner, and work into the surface. If the color transfers onto your towel or applicator, you know you have single stage paint.
