CAB SUBWOOFER

fair enough.

when you're 'lapping' michigan, let me know.

maybe you could incorporate this into your exhaust and have the tailpipe kick some bass in tune with your tunes. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

ok - i've been wrestling with this for months now - i think i may have nailed it

i've worked out a way to get a 10" driver in there and have it support down to about 25hz, at levels that will blow your mind

i've met with a fabricator, and have the design worked out - before i go and have this built, i am wondering how many people would be interested in one - i can do this as a one off for myself, or i can have them knocked out - the method changes depending on which way i go - there is no going back though

the unit will be made of moulded fiberglass (this gives maximum size and minimum weight), specifically designed to rest in the driver's side wheel well, almost completely fill the driver side wheel well, and will be large enough for either a single 10 or a dual 8 (your choice) - retail of the box is likely to be about $300

it will require a 200W RMS amp to drive it

i can begin the project the second week of january, and they tell me delivery is fast

interest?

it sounds like what i was hoping for.

tough to commit $300 sight unseen, though.

are you going to do a prototype and test it out before the final run?

how will it mount? just slide in like the kla? any mods needed to the existing car?

any sketches/photos.

i know this is your field of expertise and i want to believe the best...

i understand completely

yes, there will be a prototype and yes it will be tested

it will be a 3 piece unit - this will maximize the space - the lower half will drop in, then a center section, then the baffle with the driver - this allows us to have the largest box possible without haveing to duck in and around the opening

there will be NO mods necessary to the car

i can probably try to knock out a sketch later today

when you get the prototype, let me know. maybe you could post some pics and tell us how it sounds.

i wish i could keep my 15" back there, but trunk space is important!

put me on the list of very interested but not 100% committed yet.

i will if i get a few more people between now and then that show interest - otherwise, i am just going to build mine and call it a day, and not make a mold - after the experience with the "fuzzy dice holder", how much crap i have taken along the way (granted from a limited source), how much money i have spent on the project, and how long i am still waiting for my own production unit, i have determined i would have been better off just to have made mine and moved on - i am not initially inclined to go through that again, as much as i would like to help everybody out

well, it certainly has been a long project with MANY changes in direction, but i finally got around to building the sub today - i got the backshells done (that was the hard part) and will be working on the baffle tomorrow - i expect to be booming by tomorrow afternoon

i'll post pics and specs immediately after

a bit more info:

i gave up on the trunk concept entirely - everything i tried was just not working out the way i wanted - just too muffled of a sound - lots of resonance and not a lot of punch - i would have ended up needing 2 10s in a very large box, and then have to drop the seat backs to get there

moving on

i decided long ago to lose the storage boxes for reasons of weight and available space for cases of wine (we all know where my priorities are)

since the space was not flat, this was a bit probematic - i then started looking at it, and figured i could probably get some decent sized boxes to sit down in those seat wells, and not lose any real space

i was right

i chose punch 8" drivers because they could work well in a small box - i estimated i could get as much as .40 cubic feet per box - the punch specced up to .35 in a sealed box - perfect!

so, i began by creating a cardboard mock-up - then i made fiberglass backshells - i was shooting for a final volume of .35 cubic ft

when it was all said and done, i ended up with .369 cubic ft - subtract the displacement of the woofer of .02 cu ft, and i get, wait for it, .349 cu ft! - not too bad for eyeballing with a tape measure, huh?

i'll snap pics today and let you know what it looks like

i am soooooo stoked

ok - all done - so, the design parameters were as follows:

sufficient volume to handle 2 8" drivers (target was .35 cubic ft each)

minimal intrusion in the cabin area (gotta be able to carry cases of wine)

light weight

seemless installation

removeable for track days

finally, in the car

i haven't tweeked anything yet, but initial impressions are this is exactly what the doctor ordered - i am still going to add some hollowfill, to take care of an anticipated slight resonance, but otherwise, i think i am going to be extremely happy - final total weight, including amp is 27lbs - barely more than the storage boxes, and certainly less than those plus the bazooka i had in there

well - what do you think?

i toyed with it a bit last night - holy cow! - i might have been able to do just one driver - the only reason i did two was stereo imaging - it looks like i will actually have a boat load of headroom - woohoo!

on that, yes, i know sub frequencies are not supposed to be directional, but in this car weird stuff happens - perhaps it's just proximity, but i could definitely hear the sub's location before, and it bugged me that it was directional, so this time i wanted a more even distribution

hidden added bonus - while i was mouting the amp, i found the ground point the right had drive cabs use for the battery - we have it too - there is a very nice 8mm fine thread lug in the right side wheel well, at the rear, on the inboard panel

that looks awesome flash. makes me want to take mine out and redo it. yours has a much cleaner look. by the way, where did you mount your amp. mine definitely has to move even if i don't redo my enclosure.

back in the left rear cubby on the inboard wall - kind of tricky to do, and required a mounting plate (gas tank on other side of sheet metal)

p.s. - yes, after i do a bit of tweaking and look into costs of making the master mold, individual carpet color costs, etc., if it all works out that it isn't prohibitively expensive, i will be contemplating potentially going into production

very preliminary estimations are that final retail cost of a complete unit, with woofers, but no amp, would be around $600

ok - changed out the drivers to something better, installed some dynamat extreme, and increased the power going to these

WOW!!! very happy now - hits hard - hits clean

i can still do something like this for others, but need a few serious parties interested first

i have decided that i would not ship with woofers - you would need to get your own - just too many choices and variables there - the kit would include the backshells and a template for the baffle plate assembly - easy DIY if you are at all handy

if there are enough interested people, i will work out pricing and such

Flash,

Do you have any experience with the Blaupunkt powered subs? I think I might be able to mount one (or two) in the lockable cubbies behind the seats. They seem to be pretty small so I shouldn't have to give up much space, I am just not sure if I'll get enough sound out of them. Thoughts?

nope

the math works against the 200 - small volume of the box, low wattage, small driver - it shows frequency response down to 30hz, but it does not say at what sound level - that's a very common and very misleading sales trick - when you turn it up though, it might only go down to 80hz before it distorts - still, might add some warmth, and as long as you aren't looking for BOOM, it might not totally suck

the 210 looks like it could work pretty well though - that's a new one - dual ports, more box volume - bigger amp - should sit down very nicely behind the seat too if it doesn't fit in the storage box

if you are stuck on putting it in the storage box, remember that the box will cut down quite a bit on the amount of sound produced - you may need 2 if you go with a driver that size - if you only want to run one, and inside the storage boxes, i recommend a 10" - i'm just not sure what unit would fit in there though
