Brake Fluid Light
#1

My brake fluid warning light is staying on when the ignition is on.
It has had a history of flickering in the past, but never has it stayed on.
Fluid level is fine, no leaks. Anyone ever seen this?
I'm wondering if I should put a new unit in the fluid reservoir?

That's where I plan to start tonight, thanks. Will check back after I get to look at it again.

Let's hope the sensor / sender unit is not similarly located as the one for the windshield fluid - it's easier to take out your VDO and disconnect that warning light than get to the wiper fluid reservoir sensor to replace it. And no, I'm not kidding... that's what I ended up doing.

Being the boss, I was able to get outside (working), clean the contacts, try it connected and disconnected, no difference.
On all the time. Like everything else with this car, it possesses me, but I love it.
Oh No !!
Maybe I should just wait for the bulb to burn out?
Does anyone know where the sensor/sender is located?

I had the same issue on my old 944 and a new cap fixed my problem. Actually, the new cap went on the 968 and the "hand me down" cap went on the 944. The contacts were old and worn out. I think you can short the leads to make the light go out as a test as a full reservoir should complete the circuit.

I disconnected the sender and closed the loop with a wire.
This did not put out the warning light for brake fluid.
I'm thinking a new unit won't solve this either, or am I missing something?
Is this like a check engine light issue and something needs reset?

I have a similar issue. Brake light is off most of the time, but flickers when braking, particularly if braking hard. It's become more frequent as time goes on. I figured that the fluid might be a bit low in the reservoir so finally checked that. Its right between the Min and Max lines, which I would presume is fine. Should I just top it up and see what happens?

top it up - clean the connectors on the cap - make sure the inside of the cap is clean

I'm just living with it. I came to the conclusion that having put high intensity LEDs into my turn and brake lights seems to have reduced the current draw to the point that it faults in this way (?) It has also rendered my cruise inoperable but that's ok, I'll put bulbs back in if I go on a long trip. I read somewhere else that someone aslo had their cruise go inoperable when they put LEDs in the brake lights.

Yep, sounds like you're missing something. If you disconnected the sender (i.e. switch in the cap) and closed the loop with a wire and the light went out then you have done what a good sender (i.e. switch in the cap) will do. Get you a new cap and motor on. Probably find one at pull a part, perhaps Jetta or the like if you don't want to buy a new one. Darn lights drive me crazy. They need to work. That said now I guess I better tackle the occasional washer level sender on mine.

FWIW I topped up my brake fluid and the light stayed off. Guess that's why it's there and that's why we call it an idiot light.
