Wheel bearings
#1

I suspect my wheel bearings need some grease (at least that is what I think). I heard a strange squeeking below 45 mph coming from the left rear. It just started the other day.

It seemed to go away or make less noise over 45mph.

Has anyone re-greased their bearings before? Any tips? Is this hard to do with standard tools?

What type of grease would you recommend?

Before I re-grease them I will do an inspection to make sure they don't need to be replaced.

I think I ruled out the CV joints because the noise was present turning both right and left and it went away at higher speed.

I believe they are sealed bearings, and would have to be replaced.

The rear bearings are sealed units, so they can't be serviced just replaced. I wouldn't expect them to squeak either. I would look at the brakes or a bushing for the squeak.

+1 to Eric, bearings normally grind (or crunch) not squeak when they fail. If the noise happens that slow you should be able to very carefully put the car on stands and run it slow to find the sound.

When I had a noise from the right rear that sounded like a wheel bearing going bad (low pitched, grinding sound). I removed the brake hub and found one of the emergency brake shoe retaining springs had broken and wedged between the rotating parts. The replacement springs I got were a bit larger (from a 928) and I replaced them all. They look much stronger and should last a lot longer. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

The squeaking was rotational - so I don't think it was a bushing. It didn't seem to be caused by bumps just rolling.

And thanks for the info and tips.

I took the rear wheels off yesterday and tried to replicate the sound by hand rolling the wheels. I couldn't hear anything.

I checked the brakes and everything looked ok but, I might need to check a little closer.

I'll have to do some more investigating. Maybe I'll hang the video camera out the window so I can replay the sound when I'm not driving.

I did find both CV joint boots look like they have fluid leaking on one half. Both left and right sides had gunk on one half. The other half seemed clean.

That looks pretty normal; you'll get some film there no matter what, now a torn boot is different.

i'm with these guys - i think it's in the parking brake - it's a pretty weak design, and i see prople breaking pins and retainers all the time - all it takes it forgetting to release the brake before letting the car roll, and sometimes even just the strain from engaging it while the rotors are still hot

i had it happen to me - squeaked first, then jammed up completely

now i only engage that thing on a steep hill, and then only when the rotors are dead cold

Thanks for all the help - I can't find anything and I don't hear the noise anymore.

I checked everything.

It must have been a small stone between the brake rotor and the shield or something like that. Seems all better now.
