Back on track
#21

I'm picking the red one up tomorrow and dropping the white one off. Is your car a black one?

I haven't run with Schattenbaum in years. They were a good group when I did. My last couple of events were with Delaware and Jersey shore. Both lots of track time. I didn't get anything in this year at all as I deployed in April. I'll return mid-October making this year pretty much a bust. I'll see you guys out there next year.

Next year I plan on getting at least one event per month average. We'll see if life allows it...

Is Max still at Provost?

yes he is. He is the reason I drive 2 hours one way. He knows what he is doing and isn't trying to do me. Actually there is no reason to because with two cars he understands there is an ongoing wealth of work from me! This is opposed to the local shop whose quality has diminished as they have worked on my cars. Sometimes from a time perspective or a tech need they are the ones Iam forced to use. It is annoying that a shop can't perform quality work on an ongoing basis!

Andrew, very glad to hear the good news about your car. I am progressing albeit slowly. Your comment about the boxes of parts hit home but the extra day this weekend is going to be put to good use.

Hey Steve,

Good to hear from you. Where are you at in your project? I'd like to hear more about the suspension set-up you ended up going with, as I think it's very similar to mine. I know you're going to be very busy over the next few days and weeks, but if you have a chance, IM me with your email address and/or phone number.

Yep, having compressor put in. Is yours the 49 car? It was on the lift, very nice!

Max is the best! Never had to go in to fix anything a second time. And they don't up sell like a dealer or production shop might,

So two out of the four cars there are for sale. Robbie was trying to sell me a 944 spec for 8. Asked me if it was in my budget. What's a budget ? If I had one I probably wouldn't track a car! lol

for 2-4k more you could have my 968 :-)

Btw, I have a set of 17" wheels with nt01 tires that have about 70% life. The wheels are orange, but can easily be painted Black or silver. They were black and I painted them orange. Let me know if you are interested. 255 on rear, 225 on front.

I didn't realize it was a spec car! Just started with 235/40/18- front and 265/35/18 -rear. $?

Tires were 750 new, I'd do 100 a wheel and 100 per tire.

Don't remind me - the cost of tires is possibly the single most daunting thing about this tracking-your-car hobby/obsession. I couldn't fathom going through a set of Hoosiers every race weekend.

That's why I got nt01. They last a long time and have very good grip. They also heat up fast.

I've heard NT01's are great tires, but last time i checked, they didn't come in the sizes I want. I have 18 x 8.5" wheels up front, and 18 x 10" in back, with 255/35-18 and 285/35-18 tires (Hankook R-S3's), respectively.

I'm running the NT-01s as well and like them. Why are you running 18s? Just because you have them or is there another reason? 17s are cheaper and you're not racing... I have two sets of 17x7.5/9s I use for street and track. The street tires are basically my rains.

18s can provide better adhesion, due to the decreased sidewall flex. however, that can also lead to snap oversteer as well as understeer.

also, unless you choose carefully, the location of the mass of an 18 can dramatically decrease your acceleration and braking capabilities. however, if you choose wisely, it can put more of the mass toward the hub, and actually improve things.

18's, and the tires that go on them, can also increase loads on the suspension components, which can mean higher maintenance costs.

but, as mentioned, if you aren't actually racing, it's a more expensive proposition, to no point, so i agree, 17s would be just fine for any DE car, and in fact i think would be better, if you went to a lower profile that stock 17, thereby reducing the outside diameter, lowering the final gear ratio, and improving acceleration, albeit at a cost of top speed (which you would never use at a DE anyway).

were i to build a DE car, it would run 17 x 9 all around, with the same offset and same size tire all around. that way i could resolve the understeer issues and gain the ability to rotate tires, thereby increasing the number of events per dollar.

Everything I did to this car was on the advice of people who build and race them for a living, primarily Karl Poeltl, Pete Fitzpatrick, and David Lindsey. The set-up I went with was what I was told by these guys to be the fastest one, and this included 18" wheels (lightweight Enkei NT03's, in my case). I have the Racers Edge heavy duty A-Arms with the thicker ball joint pins to help deal with the extra stress from the wider wheels. I just got back from a practice session over my lunch break, and all I can say is that the car feels fantastic, and the feedback from the instructors who've driven it have been universally positive. I'm making horrible mistakes as I get myself re-acclimated to track driving, so I'm leaving a ton on the table, yet I'm turning lap times significantly faster than my best times before the rebuild, when my driving was much better, and am keeping up with and passing faster cars, more experienced drivers, or both.

I agree that 17" wheels would have been much cheaper - it's depressing how much tire prices jump going from 17" to 18". Would the car be as fast and composed on 17" wheels? Maybe - who knows? But I have too much invested in these wheels, and am enjoying the way the car drives too much, to switch to something else right now.

As far as the tires, it looks like Nitto makes a wider range than when I last checked - they have 245/40-18's, and 275/35-18's, which are only 10 mm narrower front and back than the Hankook's I have now. But the wear ratings of the Nitto's is actually lower than the Hankooks, which surprises me.
