Are 968s Invisible?
#1

Anyone else encounter other drivers on the road regularly not seeing you in your 968 even when you're right next to them? I'm not talking about back in the blind spot or anything...right up next to them. I've had this happen a few times in the last couple of weeks, where my front bumper is even with the front bumper of the car next to me, and he (or she) has just come right over on me into my lane, sending me onto the shoulder (thankfully). One was on a cell phone, two were not. All seemed genuinely shocked when I leaned on the horn while evading them.

I'm sure it's not so bad with a SY or GR color car (mine's black), but sheesh! Maybe the fact that it's been lowered makes it even worse. Maybe drivers are getting worse. Maybe that latest wax job made the car invisible to all but me.

Just curious if I'm the only one this happens to on a semi-regular basis! It's becoming a disturbing pattern.

Too many careless / multi-tasking drivers out on the crowded roads these days – that’s the root cause.

I’m seeing more people doing really stupid things – the best was the matronly woman driving the black Caddy Escalade I passed last year on a straight section of 4 lane divided highway. In her left hand a cel phone, and her right hand some eye makeup applicator – yep, she had the visor mirror down and was LOOKING AT THAT MIRROR, applying eye makeup, yakking on her phone and – I sped up and got WAYYYYYYYY ahead of that tank!!!

People are use to seeing the big suv's. A small sports car or motorcylce they over look. Sometimes when they are parked, too.

you know, colorado, i was driving last saturday and almost got hit twice! i thought it was just me, or something in the air. and this wasn't even on the expressway in rush hour traffic. i'm talking back road country driving. intersections where you can see for a mile in every direction. i had two - TWO cars pull out from stop signs right into my car. they waited and waited until i got right in front of where they where stopped and pulled right into me. fortuntately, the 968 handles like a porsche and i was able to avoid disaster.

is it a conspiracy? maybe the bmw guys are jealous and sent out a flyer to their spy network to take out our cars one by one.....

i have wondered this myself, since i have been backed over twice (i wasn't even in the car) by SUVs, rear-ended once by an SUV and driven into once by a minivan in the 2 years i've owned the car

deja vu - James Dean 1957..... these are small, low cars, especially with the top down. People just miss seeing the car

Holy cow, Flash! I guess I remembered the two times your car was backed over, but not the others. Maybe we need strobes on both ends of our cars.

Actually, I like Larry's theory of people being used to seeing big SUVs. If you put the SUVs, pickups, and Subarus together here, I'll bet you'd have 70% of the vehicles on the road.

Now, if I was only so invisible to the cops. Got nailed a couple of weeks ago in Albuquerque...39 in a 35 ($74). Came over a rise and two cops were STANDING in each lane with laser guns pointed. Their patrol cars (and others) were parked in a lot just off the road, waiting for "customers". They were getting almost every car that went by, with (clearly in my case) zero tolerance. End of the month (guess that went without saying).

39 in a 35???

i'd fight that one on a "speedometer error" basis - plenty of precedent cases for sure to support the defense

Problem is I'd have to drive 700 miles roundtrip to fight it. Decided to write 'em a check. They clearly need the revenue. A friend down there told me that particular police dept. got in a heap of trouble for apparently landing their chopper near a Krispy Kreme one night, and getting donuts. Sounded too "Simpsonesque" to be true, but he insisted it was.

You are exactly right! I wish so badly that every state in the union had laws against talking on the phone (unless they are hands-free), applying make-up, reading!, watching DVDs, etc. Even with laws in place, I know that people would continue to do these things, but maybe the frequency would drop a degree or two. People just don't realize how easily they lose their focus on the road. It only takes a second, and they can be off the road in the ditch or worse. Back in 1999, I was rear-ended by a driver on his cell phone. It took several years for my neck to recover...

They suck in NM. I got nailed on the way to Denver (clearly speeding). 6 days later on my way home, with the cruise control set about 2 miles over the speed limit, I got pulled over in the middle of nowhere in NM, cop claims he clocked me at 84 in a 75, which is complete BS. I went to court via telephone on it, and judge ends up saying: Well, its your word against his so you're screwed.

Bastards....

Not sure if all the cell-while-in-the-car haters saw this, but a study just came out basically saying that hands free equipment on a cell phone doesn't do much to add safety to the equation.

Personally, I think any number of things people do in cars while driving are just as distracting as talking on a cell phone, and can't really be regulated out, so I don't think cells should be. But the whole hands free cell phone then its ok argument has always been kinda funny to me. Because dialing the phone isn't really the distracting part (most of us have voice dial now anyway) nor is holding the phone to my ear (I hold soda cans all the time) its the talking part thats distracting. And hands free doesn't really fix that. Its good to see I've been right all along...!

Just my opinion. (btw - I HATE talking on my phone while in the car so I seldom make calls and never answer them. Now on the plane is a whole other matter...I'd love that law to get rescinded...

Also, while the opinions cited here are actually mine, I'm somewhat joking around so don't take this as a flame or for those of you who have been hit by people on cells, don't flame me. Or I'll have to flame back and tell you to turn off your radio because of all the people listening to radios that have hit me...heh

fortunately here in california they are now enforcing the "distraction" law - $150 ticket - they are nailing women putting on their makeup, people reading in the car, guys shaving, and of course, people on cell phones

i'd like to see them made illegal to use in the car, period, but hands free limitations are better than nothing - an active participation distraction like that is dangerous - it involves paying attention - drinking a soda doesn't require most peoople to use any grey matter - neither does the radio - agreed they can be distracting, but to a lesser degree - you also don't hold a soda or a radio up to your face, hereby completely blocking your peripheral vision on that side

i have hands free in all my cars and only dial voice dial numbers, and usually pull over to use the phone anyway

and yes, one of the pinheads that hit me was reaching over to answer his cell phone - he didn;t even drop the call after he hit me and i jumped out and ran back to his car to pummel him

This topic is going to get everyone all excited...

I used to ride my motorcylcle from Santa Monica to Downtown everyday for the 10 mile trip each way. I swear I almost got side swiped twice everyday. Good thing it got totalled the second time I went down otherwise I'd probably be dead from driving that thing in CA.

Quote:Well, its your word against his so you're screwed.

I've heard that one before. I was accused of reckless driving on my motorcycle by a swine. He said he was being nice by giving me unsafe start. To the judge, I explained that when bikes accelerate faster than cars (from between two cars) off the line, it's to be "safe". If it was unsafe, my front wheel would have been off the ground. I never exceeded the speed limit (35 mph). The cop had no proof, only his word. The swine had 5 cases that day. I must have 4-5 examples of this.

Talking to someone in your car would also have to be outlawed then. Talking, thinking, talking; same either way. Reaching for the phone, dialing, and holding to your ear are the distracting parts. Both hands free to operated the vehicle is key.

I think radio effects driving dramatically. I think when a "good" song comes on, it can potentially make someone drive much more aggressive. Should we outlaw it?

WYLDCTZ, you make some good points, and don't worry, you're among friends here. No flaming will occur, and if it does, that would be quite a shame.

I also HATE talking on my cell phone while on the road. In all honesty, I feel very uncomfortable while using the phone, and keep it to a minimum. I have to say, however, that I feel much more comfortable and alert while using a hands-free device... It makes sense that the act of talking, i.e. the distraction of being engrossed in a conversation would be the key factor leading to an accident. However, when two people are in a car together, they usually talk quite a bit... Maybe the two sets of eyes offset the increased risk factor somewhat? Also, regarding radios, I enjoy my Porsches' engine symphony and the act of driving so much that, unless the trip is more than two hours, I don't use my radio. How's that?

Flash, when you went to "pummel" the guy, how did it turn out? Do you have pictures of the brawl? Also, that is great that California is clamping down on such behaviours! As usualy, Cali is leading the way.

but, are you kidding me ?! a "distraction" law now ?! ok, so all of those things you mentioned do make sense, but is the definition narrowed on the books or is what constitutes distraction simply an opinion of the issuing officer ? if the latter is the case talk about carte blanche for city and county to generate more income ..
