Anybody know? Waterpump Impeller
#21

again, it's not boilover i'm really concerned about - it's power - 190 or so is optimal - hotter means less power - colder means potential unburned fuel, or worse, fuel wash

also, i am not talking about driving around town or on the freeway that it would run hotter - i'm talking about heavy load driving (running at 6k plus for an hour, like at a DE or something like that)

and actually, it was a 302 i was talking about, though i followed the same principals in the mg for the same reasons, with the same results - those motors (and it was those that i worked with most) reacted as depicted

given that our radiators are less than optimal in capacity for this engine, go ahead and give it a try - you'll probably find it runs hotter when hard running than with the standard thermostat, but it's certainly worth a shot - every racer i've talked to about this car so far says the same thing - ok in moderate to cold climate on the street, but don't push it - but i suppose anything is possible

don't take my word for it though - call somebody at a custom radiator and cooling system place - that's what i did, and i'm working based on that information - so far, it has proven to be accurate

A helpful hint then, how about qualifying these kinds of statements in the first place instead of this lengthy Q&A to get the full story. It would save a lot of time and confusion.

you apparantly made some presumptions on my intentions, or drew incorrect conclusions based on facts not given in evidence - i appreciate the suggestions, but unfortunately, there is no way for me to predict how someone might misinterpret what i am saying, so adding qualifications would be a pointless exercise, or at least confusing in and of itself

in reality, depicting under just what conditions it would run hotter is moot - the fact is that it most likely will - who cares under what conditions? it is still bad if it happens at all - it would be like saying that running too little air in your tire will cause a flat - the fact is that you could probably run for a very long time without getting one, but when you hit a bump - bang! - who cares? the fact is that you will still get the flat, and therefore you should not do it - the same is true of the low temp thermostat

i don't think i was unclear - i only referred to running hotter, not by how much or when, and merely speculated on any overheating possibility - i continued to deliniate how a lower temp thermostat would react - i stand by that - further detail would only bring about circular discussion fo something that was off topic to begin with

in retrospect, i should have had this conversation with eric on the phone - it's very tiring to have to explain in detail something that is really irrelevant - i think tarzan and orwell both had the right idea with one word for everything

All I am saying is that when one throws out a tidbit of information, for all to read, that goes against conventionally accepted wisdom, then it should be fully explained, nor not given at all.

I was concerned that someone gave you bad advice and you were passing it on to the forum.

Back on Topic:

Since to my knowledge there were only two variables (impeller and thermostat) that were changed regarding the cooling system, I'm going to put my old Low temp back in and report back. If that doesn't resolve my problem, I'm going to assume there is air in the system that is being stubborn.

I think you are on the right track. Go back and double check the basics and I think you will find the root cause.

dave - what i was saying has been generally accepted wisdom to me for almost 20 years now - i felt pretty embarrassed when i spouted the low temp wive's tale in front of those with whom i used to hang out at the track - they all already knew about it, and cautioned me against it, asaying that a lot of people thought the same way as i did, but were wrong - however, i'll consider that the next time i say something that goes against such a generally accepted common misconsception - maybe this should go up on "things that are wrong.com"

i appreciate your concern, but, no bad advice - i stand on "don't use a low temp thermostat" - it will not serve the car well, is not the answer to cooling woes, and will present complications - remember, i'm "Mr. Mod", and i do not recommend this one

eric - power bleed the system before yanking the thermostat - easier, cleaner, quicker way to find out
