Overheating problem, maybe? I don't know.
#1

I have a '92 968, it has started overheating. But not in a normal kind of way, a very strange way. At first temp gauge fluctuated from under halfway to 3/4, almost hot. And it would flutter slowly. Then it would peg out overheating. Pull over, it doesn't sound hot. It doesn't feel like its running hot. And after waiting a few mins, it goes back to normal. Have had replaced temp sensor replaced, fan motor switch replaced. Still does it. Went to drive last week, and soon as starting motor, temp gauge is pegged out hot. Calgon, take me away. Any ideas?

Did you do a search here on the topic ? I think I've seen fairly recent posts on problems with the temp gauge itself without any actual overheating ..

Lots of posts on this.

Check your temperature at upper, and lower radiator hoses, with laser temp gauge. This can start your diagnosis.

Beginning of summer mine was running a lit bit warmer than normal, i did lower hose, thermostat, fan temp switch, and all,is cool again.

Where and how do I find that ds968. This is my first time in a forum, so I'm kinda lost.

Do a search for "temperature gauge", and taking an educated guess, also search for "bad ground".

Do you notice your other gauges getting a little wonky at the same time?

Just got done with this - it's probably a wonky gauge. Check your temps and read, read, read.

To do a search, click on the little icon that looks like a small gear to the right of the search bar, just below the "Sign Out" prompt at the upper right-hand corner of the page. Good luck.

I would not rule out the water pump. When my water pump needed replacement, it was working intermittently because the impeller was slipping. Just a thought...

Maybe the thermostat? Mine was also ready for replacement when the water pump was replaced!

before jumping to any conclusions about anything, get REAL temp readings.

Sound like there might be air in the system, check for leaks, open the heater all the way and do a quick bleed maybe.

Before you do anything tap the plastic on your gauge cluster...seriously...these buggers are known to stick.

yup - like i said, get REAL readings. use a laser thermometer and check the temps. don't trust that gauge. there may be nothing wrong at all. seeing the different temps at different points though will tell you what the system is doing

Thanks Jay, you are my new BFF, lol. Amazing, so simple. Just tapped on the dash, and wala back to normal. Tap it again and boom, it's overheating. Thanks to everyone for all the advice and tips. Now I can finally breath easy.

There's a DIY guide at Pelican that details how to fix this issue if you're so inclined.

The tapping did not work for mine - I replaced all the rubber hoses under the hood and redid the connections on the back of the cluster to solve my overheating issue. Glad it is a simple fix for you.
