Overheating problems

Hi All,

I have a 15 old 968 convertible with 60 k on the clock - i had a buble in head which i think i got rid of - bleeding the system when hot and cold. Now the themostat has been changed but im still getting a build up of heat (wandering temp needle - upto the RED) this is only when the air con is on and its over 100 degrees 34 C out side.

Now you say thats normal ? No my mechanic says i have cold spots in the radiator causing this but i'm not sure.

Could anyone help me ?

Are you sure you've throughly bled the system?
Also the temp sender in the radiator.

Check your grounds in case it really is not getting hot and is just a crazy signal with the guage
Was the thermostat verified to open at the correct temp before it was installed?

Replace the water pump. The plastic impeller just melts away. The pump motor is fine.

i've spoken to him

it does not seem to be a water pump or any major failure item - it ran fine before it went into the shop - it also does not overheat unless it's hot outside - this would seem to rule out the pump

it looks like it may turn out to be simpler than that - i'm going to wait to see for sure, but from what he said, somebody stuck a regular screw in place of the bleed screw - it will never bleed properly like that

he's going to boil out the radiator too, just in case there is blockage there from somebody using either tap water or the wrong coolant

When my 968 started to run hot when it was hot outside it was the pump. The impeller was slipping on the shaft, so I had some fluid movement but not enough to cool her down when it got hot outside or when I was in heavy traffic without some airflow.

while certainly possible, it's not likely on this car - it was fine until it went into the shop - the moment it came out, things changed - coincidence perhaps, but with the bleed screw being the wrong one, and we all know how critical bleeding is.......

update - water pump fine - mechanic says radiator was clogged - happens a lot with tap water - odd that it wasn't exhibiting symptoms before, but i'm not there and can't speak to what was really going on
