17x9" 993 Cup wheels all around?
#1

I know there are many talks about wheel sizing, I just want to triple check before I invest. Will I be able to run 17x9" 993 cup wheels all around (I know the rears are fine)? I want to run them with a 255/40/17 tire (stock size from rear). The 993 cup 9" wheels have an offset of 55 I think. I know from what I've read that this should be fine for fitting on the front.

Currently I have a stock suspension/alignment. The shocks are dead, so I was planning on doing some upgrades. I want to do Koni yellow coilovers all around, with 350ish lb front spring and rear helper spring to match. I also want to do bigger sways (not sure if I will use M030 or a more balanced set) and strut braces (upper and lower on the front). Then lower the car and do an alignment with a little negative camber (maybe -1 degree).

Does this setup sound like it would work with the 17x9" wheels and 255/40 tires?

Thanks for the help!
Randy

Yup.sure will. I have done exactly what you are going to do and used the same pieces.... except I did use the M030 bars. ET55 9" wheels with 2554017 rubber will work fine on the front. My car is lowered now to 24 1/2 " (62mm) measured at the top of the front wheel arch. Tires are not all the same............I am using Yokohama Advan AD08 rubber now. They are much wider than the same size Nitto's I was using before but they fit up front fine.

Forgot to say though that I am using 300# springs. They are plenty stiff for autocrossing yet the car handles superbly and is still nice to drive on Florida roads. Not sure that I would care for the ride much if I went any stiffer a spring.

On my 944 I have 300 lb springs. I figure due to the weight difference a 325-350 lb spring would give the same fell. I will have to do more research on this. The 300lb front spring, 27mm torsion, and Koni yellows on the 944 are really nice to drive, well balanced, and handles like a go-cart.

What are your goals? 255/40/17 on 9" wheels all around are probably the setup to have if you want to do drivers ed events. I would probably have done this had I known... now I'm fighting understeer and excessive front tire wear (when compared to the rear). On the other hand, 255/40 on the front is overkill for street driving - you'd just be adding weight and cost.

It is my DD. I will also be doing some autocross in it. I have a prepared/stripped 944 for most of my autocrosses and track use. I know it is overkill, but want it to handle real well and I think the 9" fronts will fill the wheel wells out nicely...

Nice talk here.

Maybe this is a bit offtopic here (if it is, just ignore it please!), but my recently acquired 968 is still on stock shocks and i think they are gone - the car shakes sideways even on long straights in reaction to the slightest road bumps and in turns it just reacts too much with side inclination. I am pretty sure this is because of the weared out shocks, but would like your opinions on this - maybe some fluid needs to be changed?

Anyhow, if i go the replacing route, what do you advise? It is my weekend car, i will not do track on it, but i have a kind of "hard driving" when i drive a Porsche - this must be not just me i guess...

I would like to do it on a tight budget, as i spend a small fortune (to me) just to buy it...

definitely start a new thread in the right area, as this could turn into a long conversation

"brakes, suspension and steering" in the OEM repairs area would be right

No worries, I actually just gave you a reply on your new thread. Hope it helps...

As far as the wheels, I will test my rear winter wheels on the front to see how I like them. The only reason I wouldn't want to do the 9" is because of autocross classing. I can do 1" wider than the stock wheel, so I can only do 8.5" to stay in that class. Then again, this is not my main autocross car and the 993 cup wheels are my favorite, so I will do what I like...
