Antenna replacement
#21

are you sure the trunk mount antenna is for the radio, and not for something else, like a phone, gps, xm, yada yada?

- Darryl- Both links work fine.....not sure why you'd need to select make and model - the link takes you to the correct item.

Yes, the link worked but when I put in 1994 968 it didnt return a part number.Good to know its the correct item on the link.

Carl968'- Volkswagon, Golf, Jetta roof mount antenna mast. It screws on perfectly and looks great for around $12."

Thanks Carl. Looks like with a little tinkering, quite a few of the more modern styles will fit.

In response to Flash: I assumed radio, but as you point out, it could very well have been something else. Being a 20-yr old car, it did live through the age of external antennas for cell phones. Being a cab, you can't mount anything on the roof.

I haven't followed the wire to see where it goes, if anywhere. In fact, I'm not sure if there is a wire connected to that mounting point. Maybe I'll just put an antenna there to improve my reception and re-use a previous body violation. Win-Win.

yup - i've seen quite a few cars with antenna back there. always have turned out to be for something added.

i always thought that if i ever had to change antenna design, that i would go back to the tried and true retractable type. not sure where it would live yet, but it might even fit where the connector goes in at the lower right corner of the windshield.

Has anyone had a go at replacing the whole antenna including wires on a coupe? I have this to do on mine and not sure if this is a simple DIY or whether I sould get a good audio installer involved.

Putting in a new deck is very straightforward. When you get ready just start a new thread and we'll all pitch in to get you there. Besides power and phasing there isn't to many other gotchas.

In the old days it meant soldering or (shudder) 3M tap connectors. But companies like Crutchfield have come a long way in making standard "plug-in" connectors you can buy to click right in to your existing wiring. Metra is a brand that makes many connectors, wiring harnesses, and even dash plates. I just put the same double-DIN in my wife's new EOS as I have in the 968, and it was far easier doing the 968 because it was straight-up wiring, whereas the EOS needed an extra computer to talk to the car's "network" and it had "diversity" antennae, etc. What a pain that was. But I used several parts from Metra to do the install, so there was no wire-cutting and I can take out the double-DIN and put the stock stereo right back if I want to. Probably wouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Two places to look:

Me too. The only tricky part was holding the antenna stem firmly in place while my son drove the car in circles until it was all threaded. ;-) :-)

I too need to replace my antennae base as the amplifier is not working on my 1995 coupe. Has anyone attempted to do this. what is involved and how do I access the nut holding the antennae to the roof? Any pictures or instructions would be helpful.

William, I just received my new antenna mast today and I'm in the same boat.   I'll be interested to see how to access the mounting nut.

Actually, this might be the best description:
