Steering Wheel not Straight
#1

My steering wheel does not set straight while driving straight, it sets like it would if making a slight left turn. Does anyone know if this can be fixed and ho or is it something I just have to live with?

Thanks,

Rob

absolutely can be fixed - the right way is on an alignment rack

assuming it is not pulling one way or the other, and it is just the steering wheel centering, the quick fix is to make adjustments on the tie rod ends yourself - just make sure you lengthen one by exactly the same amount as you shorten the other - i just did this the other day - my last alignment left it off just a snitch

if you've never done anything like this before though, i would caution you against trying it, as it could result in sever tire wear if you do it wrong

Thanks Flash,

Where do you get your alignment done? I would hate to take it to a place like Firestone and have them mess my car up.

Thanks again,

If everything is tracking straight and everything, it could be just as simple as removing the steering wheel and recentering it. Sometimes that needed after work like steering rack replacements.

One quick observation - my car, even after an alignment, would seem to shift the wheel a bit right or left after a right or left turn but the, after time, it would always be straight. Seems like there was a bushing or "stop" that was missing, allowing a bit of slop. Replacement of the bushing left the wheel always in the same position.

while you can certainly remove and recenter the wheel, it doesn't always work - i have usually been right in between two splines - besides, no need to risk the dreaded airbag light - better to adjust via the tie rods

kim - you may have other issues there as well - you should have somebody check out the rack - could be as simple as the bushing - could be a sign of worn inner sockets

Is this difficult to do? The guy I bought the car from told me he just repalced the power steering rack, but the car is pulling to the right a little.

Thanks,

ah - if it's pulling, then you definitely need an alignment - you may need other parts - take thee to thy local front end shop - likely passenger side castor block
