Another rattle issue!!
#1

I have been chasing a rattle in or around the engine for some time. Finally bought a stethoscope only to find that I can not isolate the rattle in the engine compartment. So, I put the car up in the air with the engine idling and was able to isolate the rattle as coming from the area of the bell housing around the clutch. Unfortunately, I was not able to find any external bracket or bolt that is loose, so have concluded that the rattle is coming from the clutch or adjacent area.

The car runs fine. The clutch operates smoothly. No slippage. Tranny shifts perfectly, but without knowing what the rattle is, I am hesitant to take the car on a trip, fearing a breakdown far from help!

With the 968, is there any history of failures in the flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc, etc that begins with a rattle? And, if so, is there a way to diagnose it other than taking the clutch apart? Records that came with the car indicate that the flywheel may be original. Looks like a clutch disc was replaced about 30K miles ago at 65K. No mention of the pressure plate or throw out bearing ever being replaced. Or the clutch fork, etc.

The rattle was first noticed about a thousand miles ago, and has gotten a little bit worse with time and mileage.

What do you think?

I'd be interested to know too.

I've just now had a report that the same sort of rattle comes from "a cracked flywheel" that's been confirmed by visual inspection. They're saying that it's "dangerous to drive, because it could fly apart and cause a lot of damage... " But I've heard similar nose stretchers before.

Mine's a cab, 1992, with 64,000 kilometres.

Since the 968 does, in fact. have a dual mass flywheel, it is entirely likely that the rubber between the 2 flyweel components has "cracked"...doesn't sound like a "nose stretcher" at all

This shop has way exaggerated things before, is all I meant. And there were one or two on this one too. I got good advice, from other places, that the rubber will show small cracks that are normal, but is done when it rips and tears, which is what I have here. The first report was that the metal was cracked, and risked disintegration, which is characteristic of the manual but not of the Tip.... So I did have a stretcher, one of many.
