I had been on the Batch 3 list, when another Forum user with a Batch 2 kit decided to wait on his install. So with Flash's blessing (and warranty coverage), I bought it still in its unopened shipping box.
After rebuilding my engine from the bare block up twice in the last 6 months or so, I really didn't need another 968 project. But what the heck, you can never have enough torque, right?
Before starting the install, I pulled the balance shaft and cam belts to troubleshoot a tiny oil leak coming from the front of the engine. These belts are much easier to get at with the radiator out, so this was a good time to do it. I am pretty sure I found the source to be one of the through bolts of the oil pump. I used an o-ring and some RTV and am crossing my fingers. I also have a bad A/C clutch, so that is off and waiting for an overhauled unit to come from Zim's ($225 no core).
As others have said, this is a well designed kit. Flash has very cleverly used existing mounting points for the various brackets to eliminate the need for punching any new holes in our nice sheet metal. So far I have 4 or 5 hours in the install. I am taking it slowly and have taken a few things in and out a couple of times to make sure they are right. I am trying to learn from others to avoid wearing holes in oil lines and other such disasters.
The manual is very detailed. Flash has used a lot of color pictures to show how to do things. In my manual anyway these came out a little dark and some are hard to make out. (or maybe it's just my old eyes) In any case once you get the part in the general vicinity of where it goes it becomes pretty clear what needs to be done.
The kit is divided into a number of subsections. Flash has put the parts for each of these subsections in individual baggies. This makes parts identification easier, keeps from having too many loose parts lying around and helps match the parts with the manual sections. I've have had a couple of questions so far and have gotten fast responses as others who have done the install have also reported. The service is great; no doubt about it.
Assuming I get my A/C part quickly and I don't end up traveling somewhere this week, I hope to have this running by the end of the weekend. I'll post if anything interesting happens as I put this thing together.
