replacing power steering fluid

Catching up on deferred maintenance I want to drain the PS fluid and replace it since it looks as much like crude oil as it does hydraulic fluid. But I don't know any of the details. Any help? I know about turning the wheels from side to side when refilling but that's about it. There's a filter somewhere isn't there?

You need to have a clear hose which fits snugly into the return hole in the reservoir tank. Apply suction to this line with a vac pump hooked up to a sealed bucket. Run the engine and remove the old fluid. As this is being done, when reservoir get to the bottom and is empty, suck out more for a few minutes, and Stop. Don;t rev the engine and don;t run too long without full fluid, may hurt pump.



At this point it is worth 30$ to fit a new reservoir and replace any leaky hoses (which you have already determined needed replacement and already have ready to go). I think there is a filter in the bottom of the reservoir, not sure though. If it is original with clear plastic top, it probably already has cracks and needs replacing anyway. Also check hose clamps, other hoses etc.,.





Now fill the reservoir with compatible PSF and start car. you will now have to replace the suction hose and flush the system. Keep the suction hose in place in the return port in the reservoir tank and suck out old fluid WHILE filling reservoir with new fluid. Hose MUST stay in the return port or it will suck out the new fluid you are adding. Do this for a few minutes until the old fluid has nice clean color.



Below are some pics of vac systems. Yes, you could just unhook the return line and run the car for a while, but messy. Don;t get this fluid on any paint, it will eat through it. These units cost about 50-80$ and are well worth the cost. You can use them in the radiator and tranaxle as well.



There are cheap squeasy ball hand pumps, but what a pain to use in my opinion. So for about 130$, get the pump, fluid, and new reservoir and do a good job. ALSO: don't ever turn the steering wheel when changing fluid. You can damage the pump and assist mechanism. Once changed and run for a few minutes to get the air out, then you can do some side to side with the wheel and reflush the system until clean.
