My '92 968 has a new noise. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> It's a grinding or rubbing sound coming from the right rear

area. Never had this sound before. Stopped when car stopped, then after

about 3-4 miles completely went away. Sounded too strong to be the brake pads, but

it might be...



Any thoughts about what I should be looking at?



Thanks forum for any assistance from members who might have experienced this.

Check out your CV joint boots, they may be torn/loose, which would lead to your CV joints going bad. If you jack up the side of the car and pull on the rear wheel, and can feel it pull in and out, that could also mean your wheel bearings are bad. Good luck with it, and I look forward to getting together soon!

Does anything make the sound change (other that stopping)?



Going around a corner/curve

Breaking hard/soft

Driving fast/slow/reverse

How long did it last (3-4 miles)

Did it come and go

Dips-Bumps big/small

Had the car been sitting for awhile



or any combination of the same

Scott, pull the brake disc on the side that is making the noise and check the emergency/hand brake return springs. When mine broke it made an intermittant scraping/rubbing/grinding noise that sometimes went away after driving for a while. The spring was broken and sometimes rubbed on the drum. When I got replacement springs they were larger (from the 928) and look like they will last longer. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Thanks for the responses and feedback. I am thinking about the return springs on the e-brake as

the likely culprit. Thanks Bob for that feedback- The p/o had the d/s rear wheel bearing replaced, but

not the p/s



But, I have not yet pulled the rotor off and taken a peek in there yet, so it could be any one of

a number of things, like the CV joint. The noise did not change when I did a tight turn, and I

did one 180 degree bender intentionally to load up that side to see what happened - so far, nothing...





I'll be driving the '87 944 until I get this sorted out. I have learned from experience (on that car) that if those springs cut loose, and the e-brake locks up while you are going, say, 45 mph, then <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Replacing

a control arm (which I bent) and bearing is a BIG DRAG!

Noise is gone, without explanation.



I pulled the p/s rear rotor, and found nothing wrong with the e-brake assembly and

springs.



Bled my brakes while I was at it. Much better response now.



CV boots looked good - clean, and no cracks or leaks.



I will continue to troubleshoot, because I am pretty sure the noise will return...

I had a similar problem, and thought also at the e-brake, but ...



The noise was caused by the central nut that holds the brake assembly (rotor) to the suspention which has lose a little and causes play on the wheel.



The nut is tightned again and the noise disappeared.

right after i read your post my car started making a grinding noise from the driver side rear,

went back pushed on the rotor sheild and a rock fell out! WHOOh what a releif <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This might have been what happened to me - as a matter of fact, I had just driven through

an area with lots of loose gravel.
