"After market" Shift boot
#1

So I've purchased a MOMO "after market" shift knob and plan on also getting a ssk. I am looking at the MOMO short leather boot but was wondering how well it fits into the base on the console. Does anyone have any pics or experiences installing this type of setup?

Thank you in advance,

JoshO

PS. I would like to order today so hurry up with the responses. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have a momo shift knob but I just cut my existing boot and zip tied it off under the knob.

i almost bought one around christmas, but had a few other things i wanted to do first.

i'll be interested to see how you like it and what goes into the install.

are you purchasing from 9xauto?

from what i understood, you have to purchase the shift mechanism and a knob separately from them. i think the shifter was a kokeln? supposedly, it was a superior design - connects at two points instead of just one.

were you going to purchase the part that goes to the tranny to shorten the shift throw, too?

I've felt the throw of the less expensive unit and it felt great. Not sure what the difference would be with the Kokeln unit.

I have already ordered the MOMO knob that I liked. I guess I'll just order the MOMO boot and hope it fits.

yep, those were the same two that 9xauto had.

i talked to mike over there.

the less expensive one has a pin connector on one side that can break since it's only connected on one side.

the kokeln connects on both sides and is more solid.

that's just what i heard. no experience here.

he also told me that these don't actually shorten the throw, just lower the knob which would essentially make you have to move the knob a lesser distance.

he also sold something that went in the trans to shorten the shift distance.

i hope that helps. mike was very talkative and shared a ton of info with me if you'd like to talk to him.

plz post what you come up with. i'll be very interested.

Just a slight sidetrack, If anyone is considering a replacement shif knob, consider a Boxster S / 996 knob. They come up on e-bay all the time. It plugs right on to the 968 lever and the shift pattern is correct. You only need to cut the boot and zip tie it from underneath.

a short shifter is high on my list - though i already have the 944 racing kit in the rear, i still want the pattern tighter, and the shifter shorter

likely i will do one more along the lines of the one that chris sells, but it will accept the factory knob - i just haven't gotten around to ordering a duplicate stock shifter so i can cut it and shorten it

I have the Kokeln and it really did not do much to shorten the shift for me.

i sure wish jeff was still making his kits - it reduced the throw by about 30%

He is going to look at my Kokeln while he has the car and see if anything can be done with it.

So I decided to just order the stuff and see how it works when I get it. I went with a MOMO shift knob and black leather boot. The MOMO boot screws onto the shifter so that is pretty clean, hopefully it will fit well at the base. I chose the ssk from www.speed-6.com. I'll let you all know how this turns out.

Dave, is that your stock shift lever? It's hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like it sits a little lower than the stock shift knob.

Josho, keep us updated on how the Momo boot fits.

Yes, it is stock. It may look lower because the boot may be bunched up more due to the splice being lower on the knob.

996 knobs fit perfectly as well - here's a pix. of the one in my car - but will require some sound cushioning ( rubber ) to be inserted in the knob's chamber; the carbon fiber is so much lighter than the stock unit, it does not have the mass-tuned capability to eliminate the buzzing you might hear at a couple of rpm ranges...however, the rubber mitigates that to ALMOST a silent mode ( only with the windows closed, radio and air both off, car parked, if you rev it, chances are you'll still hear a buzz somewhere, but IMO, the improved looks definitely warrant the small sacrifice )

Todd,

No, that's a 968 one - it was cut, the top 1/2" of the leather is inverted and mounted on the new shifter (with a plastic tie-strap), just at the right level.

It's as secure as can be, and it looks flawless: does not seem as if it was

"put together" at all -very much a OEM-appearance to it.
