Activating daytime running lights

FWIW O'Reilly's didn't carry the H3 amber (55 watt or otherwise) and couldn't even special order them (they did have the 100 watt on the shelf)  I also tried Carquest (after trying almost everybody else locally) and they suggested the 4x4 off road place, they were under the impression they were illegal... I thought as you did until the pot laws brought my attention to the topic.

just as i said.  federal law trumps state law.  a "memo asking not to prosecute" is not law.

The national speed limit is a good example of what the feds can do and how the states responded.

Since most everyone ignores the speed limits laws ( federal or state ) why in the world would you guys be concerned about a rather insignificant ( IMO ) wattage of lights laws ?!

On a related note I haven't seen a single car yet with its lights on during rain when the windshield wipers are on. At least in Ca the law mandates the headlights to be on while your windshield wipers are on, regardless of being in broad daylight or not.

there are some interesting exceptions to the fed trumping state thing.  it always relates to funding though.  in the case of the speed limit, there is a change in the federal highway funding states receive, if they choose to not follow the federal speed limit.

i see headlights on with wipers all the time.  in fact, like many new cars, the X5 automatically does it.

I would still like to do this but make it switchable so they are hidden and only used when I want them.

the Canada DRL put on your fog lights when the engine is running, no side lights or tail lights or dash illumination.

and go off when dipped beam is selected, I don't want to run fog lights all the time so another solution is the project.

so with this in mind i have been shopping..................

First thing needed is a controller for DRL

this will control the function of the DRL.

even dim them when indicators are used on that side of the car,

then on to the lights...

I have bought some of these they are 10w led and 20mm in diameter, I intend to hide these in the lower grill right at the outside edges, I have 4 of them but may only use two.

as my lower grille is just a bit of cheapo mesh it wont matter if I bugger it up.

what do you guys think about this.....................

I got the Fog light bulbs and am really pleased with them. Not a big deal really but they add a lot to the look, aside from the practical aspect that in hazy/foggy weather I'll get better visibility. They are not as good as with the amber fog lenses I suspect but are better than the regular clear bulbs, and they function as auxiliary driving lights just as well.

So Wildcat, where did you end up purchasing bulbs and what is description. I would like to copy you. Sounds like cheap way to get a little more light on road from clear fog lenses?

I got them at Wal-Mart of all places. They didn't have them in stock locally so I had to order them on-line. They are H3 Fog lights and have a color temperature of 4500 kelvin which is equivalent to sunlight. And they were very reasonable. $10 for the pair. I didn't think they'd be as good as the amber lens type but in fact they are just as good if not better.  I remember the old incandescent type and these halogen are far superior.

Wonderful! This is sure to be the least expensive upgrade I ever accomplish with 968. Thank you.

Be interested to see how they look in the grill. Not concerned about reduced air flow living in jolly old' are you?

don't think a whole 40mm is going to affect it much, i don't drive it hard enough to get it warm never mind hot

there is no real perspective in the pictures, but the cable is 3mm

Seeing it,  I think they'll be complimentary but I was having difficulty imagining what it was you had in mind. I remember some older British cars having similar looking lights for side markers. The picture I posted with the new fog bulbs give the car a bolder stance, which I like, and those lights are really nice, almost a gold color. That's enough for me.

excuse the broom handle the gas struts need replacing, when its cold the bonnet (hood) drops on your head, and from experience it really hurts....
