Well, if there is no 134a in the system, a pressure sensor will not let the relay kick on. You may have a leak. I would start checking the valves first... see if it holds a vacuum. Since very few people actually have tools to do ac service, I would take it to the shop that did the intial work and demand they inspect their work.

i think this is where that "seal" thing gets involved - everybody else i had ever heard from said that to change from 12 to 134, you had to change every seal in the system, and every hose as well - no idea if they did that, but it sounds like something at least failed, or at worst was not changed or not changed properly

most independent shops can test that system and find the leak

I think the most common area for leaks on this car have been the manifold o-rings, where the hoses attach to the compressor. They are fairly easy to get at and cheap. Get those changed first. The compressor body can develop leaks too, but the telltale on that is compressor oil under the car. Replacement of all the seals and the hoses is usually a last resort.

I think this is what Dave is talking about... it's what was wrong on my AC system:

If this is the problem, you can diagnose it by putting pressure in your system, and squirting soapy water on the compressor... these O-rings are at the top of the compressor, which must be accessed from underneath the car.

I don't think the type of refrigerant will deteriorate the seals. I have used both with no issues. I have been running Propane for 16 years with no problem ( 944 ) and my other cars, plus it has a higher capacity for carrying energy, meaning its colder than freon or 134A, and its cost is cheap. If it leaks out no issues with the environment. I know it is flammable but in the event of a fire, less than a lb. of propane will be nothing compared to the 100lbs + of pressurized gasoline connected to a 24 gallon tank.

i know this sounds weird, but my a/c stopped working this summer and it turned out to be a bad fuse connection in the fuse box. we twisted one of the tips on a fuse a tad to snug up the connection and everything has been a-ok since.

i know this is random and probably not common at all, but it'd be worth checking.
