AC compressor noise
#1

My compressor has decided to be a noise maker. My PM says time to get a rebuilt unit.

Any brands to stay away from or recommend?
Is there more than one unit for our cars?
Sources for rebuilt?
A fast search got me to CAR PARTS WHOLESALE...HRM A/C compressor reman unit $ 338.05 # HRMP191101 by H.R&M. 10P15E type.

Thanks
Brian

What year car? Also plan on replacing other things like the drier, and the two rubber hoses. The o-rings really should be replaced to and the expansion valve. Make sure you give the system a good flush to, and if you like the environment bring it to a shop to have the old refrigerant recovered.

Right, I plan to replace these as well as the belt. Mt PM will do the R134 in and out.
Any brands that I should look for or stay away from in the Japanese rebuild world?

The 911 world seems to use Griffiths a lot, they have a whole kit that includes everything and newer updated style compressor. http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/ac/944ac/index.html

I haven't replaced the compressor in my 968, I swear it makes more noise then it is suppose to but haven't compared it with anyone yet. But I have done the compressor in my 928, for that one I actually got a rebuilt unit off of Ebay, and have had good luck with it.

Dude all I can say is hurry up and git 'er done!

Don't be like me and find yourself sitting by the side of the road SUCKIN', watching your buddies wave and honk as they motor on by headed to the "Big Event".

My "noise" came on rather suddenly (as in a day or two) this past summer. I figured hey, WTF, I've had noises before. No big deal right? It'll pass.

Well let me tell you that if your compressor is the OEM unit, you might find yourself in the same situation I did. My unit actually ate itself internally which in turn caused the pulley to lock up. I can only guess that it happened so suddenly, the compressor clutch didn't have the split second to disengage and it smoked the belt before I could disengage the a/c button and bring her to a halt.

Bad... yeah, bad.

After a lift back to the nearest dealer (an hour later) and since there was no compressor available (2 days waiting time)...the tech opted to bypass the compressor with a shorter belt and I was on my way... sans A/C.... to Italy....... in May.... hot.... humid.... wife not happy....... me LESS happy.

Hurry and change the compressor now. Be happy later.

Anchorman had several bolts come loose, not a happy outcome. Don't let this wait!

Hey Lonestar. I am taking the AC compressor off of my '92 for rebuild or replacement so can you tell me what size the by pass belt was? I live in NS Canada and would like to be able to get one (the belt) at a local parts store. Thanks   Dave

I recently had to replace my A/C unit due to the fact that the bracket on top of the A/C compressor broke. I bought a new A/C compressor unit from Autozone $784 including the dryer as it was the same price as the OEM but came with a lifetime guarantee.
