OT: Decided to settle the 911 vs. 968 question...
#1

Never one to want to be accused of not fully understanding the subject on which I am commenting, so, when the opportunity recently presented itself, I took it! I bought a 1983 911SC, pure stock, and in concours condition thruout... 172 HP and 175 lbs ft of torque; 2586 lbs. with half tank of fuel and one person (not me!) on board. 58K original miles.

To be completely fair, this car has the "Sport" Option Groups... 16" Fuchs, Sport Suspension Package, Front and Rear Spoilers, and a fairly new set of Dunlop SP40 tires... Fresh Clutch, fresh Valve Adjustment, compression all at 160, give or take 5 lbs. Air/Fuel Mixture Controls properly adjusted to factory specs...

So, how does it compare to my 968, which is still in stock form, and does not (just yet) have the M030 upgrades installed (okay, I'm lazy, but I'm getting there!)???

Well, to be completely fair, I love the d**m thing, but it ain't no 968!

What it is: Light, tight, growly, rides pretty stiff, but not TOOO stiff (but don't hit any potholes!). Decent acceleration (6.7 to 60, 15.3 in the 1/4 mile), and still twitchy handling if really pressed in a corner, but understeers more than I thought it would, or should... maybe the tires??? maybe suspension setup???

And, of course, it draws attention like no see 'um's to a tourist in shorts! Maybe the Platinum Metallic paint and the instantly recognizable "Whale Tail" help, but the classic 911 shape really grabs them!

What it ain't: It is not the smooth, predictable, curve cutting, modern (sort of) interior, low end torque rich 968. And even with a brand new A/C System (R134) in the SC, the Air JUST makes it, compared to the ability to chill a bottle of Moet in the 968!

Bottom Line? Well, we are back to Apples and Mangos here... one will not do; you must have two! Hmmm...maybe that was Porsche's marketing plan all along! :>()

Yes, the 968 is going to start peeing power steering fluid all over the garage when I finally get the SC back home again in Indiana! But I promise to love them both equally, just like very different children!

Nice find. It's funny, I just read the article that created much controversy. The only part of the argument I agree with is that there should not be a winner at the end. Each car appeals to a different side. As Darth proves though, there is more than enough love for both to coexist - in the same house even!

When I think of a 911, this is the car that comes to mind with its big whale tail spoiler. Gotta love these cars.

love the 76 turbo tail. nice car.

I've driven an 83 SC with cams, chip, exhaust and that car hauled a$$ for what it was. Easily faster than a 968.

What I took from the story is that two Porsches are better than one.

No mention of the sounds. What about the "air cooled" sound? All that hardware in the rear just screaming that Porsche song.

I had a 66 911 years ago. Fun, but sort of crude and six Solex single barrels to keep in sync.

If it were only Laguna Green (or is it Laguna Blue) and a Targa...that's precisely what I'm looking for. One on eBay now in MA but alas, no funds right now...

Very nice indeed. Congrats, Darth.

Laguna Blue, IIRC...

Yes, the song of the flat 6 at full tilt! A sound to behold...

Mine still has the factory original exhaust, with Cat, so it's somewhat "depressed", but still very unique... I understand that if I upgrade to SSI HE's with the Dansk Sport Muffler, the sound improves immensely... Something to consider, but right now it could got to PCA Preservation Class Concours Judging with very little effort, and that is an interesting option!

Re: the '66 as "Crude"... I have to say that even my '83 SC has an element of "crudeness" about it, that in fact, reminds me of dashing around in my 1971 Karmann Ghia Coupe, but with a bit more HP! I suppose the new 996's and 997's are way past that feeling, which is what makes the middle years such a delight!

Darth,

Very, very nice find. Pristine original SCs are getting extremely hard to find. Also, there seems to be a renewed interest in these wonderful 911s (especially the last year 83 models, Congrats!!!!).

I've also been thinking about an SC or maybe an 89 3.2 Carrera. Guess it depends on what's available. Even though I'm a devoted fans to the 80's and 90's air-cooled 911s, a BIG part of my sports car affection is dedicated to our treasured 968.

I agree, with the above comments, as we are Porsche fans, "both" is better than one!
