A late October meet? (Bay Area)
#1

Grrr. You Bay area guys sure are boring.

JK

But really, it would be nice to grab a bite to eat and just hang out again.

Anyone interested?

This time we need more than 2 968's and a van showing up.

Something tells me these half assed monthly meetings with a couple of 20 somethings and a pizza aren't going anywhere.

Part of the problem, I suspect, is that most of us are working professionals who are short on free time. Between working full time, going to school 1/2 time and wine making, free time is virtually non-existent for me. It will ease up after the grape harvest is done. I'm still waiting on grapes that probably will be harvested sometime in the next 3 weeks to a month, depending on weather. When fermentation is largely complete, late November into December I'll have more availability.

just a note on what seems to work and what doesn't - take it for what it is, but having done a number of these, i feel qualified to lend my advice and observations

coffee meets - works if it's early enough on saturday, and ends early enough - ones that start late or go late don't seem to work well, as most people do not want to give up a whole day - sunday doesn't seem to work well at all

lunch meets - don't seem to work well at all - agreeing on a restaurant, time, location, making arrangements, getting confirmations, et all, seems to be too logistically complicated - also things seem to "come up" at the last minute and people drop out, and somebody always ends up holding the bag

dinner meets - forget about it

after work pub meets - they work, especially in more urban areas, but can be a handful to plan, as many are afraid of driving after drinking

the biggest single factor in making a gathering work is to have an "event" associated with it - a well planned fun run, a wine tasting, a barbeque, a track day, a car show, a tech day, a detail day, whatever, but a bigger reason than just a few guys getting together over a slice of pizza - something that makes it an "attraction" and not just a "wing it" kind of thing

hope this helps - again, take it for what it's worth

let me know if there's anything else i can do to help

Hmmmm.

Good advice.

I'm also just stating that Nor-Cal is becoming dullsville.

Although I do have wayyyyyy to much free time.

lol - i don't know how dull they are or not, but my point was that you probably stand a better chance of finding out by wrapping a meet around an event - thus far, there hasn't been a lot of that going on up there

you have to give people a reason to prioritize a car thing over what they would normally do - it's just too easy to "have something come up" or people to be "busy"

the time of year is an issue too - i have thrown events and been to events that were at a time that was too hot, or too cold, or wet - that will dramatically affect the turnout

it also requires a lot of time and effort to put something together, including a lot of direct contact with people - a mere post of a suggested get together doesn't really do it - even for ones that are "known commodities" it takes a good amount of tracking people down, sending out emails, and making phone calls, to get a good turnout - it takes somebody with a lot of enthusiasm, and the willingness to spend their own time (and often money) to put something together

it can be done, and i highly encourage it, because we all have a lot of fun at them, but it isn't generally easy

i'd love to see the norcal contingent do more - i'm just not sure who is going to take the bull by the horns and organize it

I'm probably going to do just the annual Paso Robles meet, and that's pretty much all.. maybe getting to that age where I'm turning into a grumpy old man , or may be just a temporary phase , but I simply don't have that drive ( no pun intended ) to do these things ..

Geez... I couldn't even make the Paso Roble run this year. Does that make me beyond old man???

For me it's a prioritizing my time thing -- but if it works out, I'll show.

I've also noticed that 944-boys tend to do more get-togethers (they just had a BBQ in Napa last weekend, and then Taco Tuesday in Sacramento). I think the average 944-owner is in a different phase of life than the average 968-owner. I personally have a hard time getting excited over one-dollar tacos....

BTW, in case we want to make an event out of it, I'm half-tempted to do a track day on Dec 1 hosted by ARC/NCRC at Thunderhill -- it's only $99 (plus, gas, tires, brake pads, wear and tear.....)

Your just being selfish Dan. We need more opportunities to oogle that fine Iris Blue Coupe

For me, as long as it isn't more than a couple of hours drive distance, and 10 hours total event time, I live for excuses to get in the car and go. So does my son. Maybe that will wear off after I have the car for a couple of years, dunno.

Agree with flash that earlier is better. I got up at 2 AM every Saturday for about 4 years so that I could get in 8 hours of work and still have some time for my family. I take that approach to these types of events. If I roll out the door at 4 or 5 and can get back by 2 or 3 on a Saturday everone wins.

I'll have my 968 at the Red Tractor Cafe in Dublin, CA for a breakfast on Saturday, October 25th at 9AM. It's an informal breakfast for whomever wants to show up, including Diablo PCA members in the Southern end of our geographic footprint. If somebody knows a nice local road there may well be an informal drive afterwards, or else I may lead anybody interested up to Parts Heaven in Hayward.

It won't be a dedicated 968 event, but there'll be at least one there. And if it's not a convenient location, in November I expect to have another somewhere closer to Fairfield or Vacaville at the other end of Diablo's range.

Breakfast at the Red Tractor was a hit. Start to finish about 15 people showed up, one of whom mentioned seeing my previous posting in this thread. Very cool, and good to have met you D.

Looking at Mimi's in Fairfield on Nov 22nd unless I learn of a better venue, and then someplace around Brentwood in December, maybe the 16th. The more the merrier, no RSVP required.

I would love to meet up but my 968 is giving me some fitz. My odometer just stopped working. But since you're all the way up north of SF, it's harder for a South Bay guy to make it up there. Any way of meeting half way?

I know....I suck. But then it's hard when the wifey is not too happy that I would take time away from her weekend agenda. Meaning she wants to spend time together since we don't really get to go out on the weekdays. You guys know what I'm talking about.

That's a long ways off, but after the North in November we'll head to the East in December - well, Brentwood is still North for you, but it's part of Diablo's footprint that's been largely ignored.

I might be up for that. It depends on when in Jan though. First 2 1/2 weeks I am stuck in Vegas putting up my company's booth at CES. I'm not sure about you guys but that is waaaayyy too long to be in Vegas. Vegas is good for a weekend.

Well, after a few days the magic glitter of Vegas wears off, unless you're addicted to one of the many vices they've turned into an industry... But hey, without those rose colored glasses on the place is pretty surreal and observing that can be it's own reward.

January will probably be the 17th or 24th, but I need to coordinate this with ye olde snowboarding calendar. (Who says I don't make sacrifices for the club? )

It's just me I'm guessing but anytime someone mentions rose colored glasses I think of Elton John's many colorful glasses he has been seen with in the past. Then I see the lights off the Strip in Vegas reflecting off of them.

Anyways, it would be nice to be able to drive the 968. I will be taking it out of hibernation then.
