i have a cab, so my a/c has almost never been used. however, i did turn it on this weekend and discovered that it only works some of the time. without getting too detailed, the first thing i noticed was that the light in the switch was not coming on when the a/c wasn't working. funny thing is that i've tried it since and it does work off and on.

is there history of the switch itself going bad? i'd say it's a blown fuse, but it does occasionally come on...

i searched the archives, but couldn't find anything mentioning the switch.

The first thing to check is if the refrigerant is fully charged. There is a switch that will prevent the system from turning on if the charge pressure is too low. You might be right on the limit where the pressure switch cycles through its limit.

Only the '92's had R12. '93 and up have R134. There should be a sticker next to the receiver / drier that spells this out.



If you have a '92 and and need refrigerant, now would be a good time to convert to R134. If you are a DIY'er, then there is another alternative and that is the hydrocarbon based refrigerants. You HAVE to do this yourself because the AC shops won't touch it.

I also have a '92 with R12 that's in need of a charge, so I would be interested in the hydrocarbon alternatives. I've been looking at Freeze12, but I'm not clear on whether this is an easy DIY item. I've seen kits on ebay that seem to include all the fittings, refrigerant, oil, and stopleak stuff, but I'm skeptical. Do I need any special equipment to recover the remaining R12, or can I just install the adapters and top up with the Freeze12? What about ensuring the proper amount of oil in the system? Why won't the shops deal with this?



I'd love to go this route, since most shops are telling me I have to convert to R134 starting at $400, assuming nothing else is wrong with the system.

i decided to look through the maintenance history that came with the car. the report from a year ago states that the pressure in the a/c is fine, but that they had to twist the prong on the fuse in order to make good contact and get the system running. sounds pretty strange. i passed the info along to the garage that's working on the car right now. i hope that it's just a poor connection that they can tighten up.



in other news... some of you probably read the posts on my screeching brand new brakes. i finally took the car back to the installer and after doing some research they asked me if i had ever heard of anti-squeal shims. apparantly they had not. sounds like a simple fix, but it would have been nice if they had known to put them in before!!! they claimed that the new pads and rotors did not come with the shims, therefore they did not install any. funny that all of you guys knew what they were and that they needed to go in!

the weird thing is that one brake was making a high pitched screetch and the other was making a very deep, hollow resonating sound. i've never heard that one on a disk brake before.

I have a 92 with R12 which needed recharging. I found a shop that still has R12. Cost me $200 for ac service and R12.
