968 vs. which Ferrari ?
#41

there is definitely nothing like them, and once you've driven one for a while, it's very hard to not want to drive it all the time. in spite of the various shortcomings, there is something very esoteric about them that is very addictive. still, there are only a couple of them that i would consider owning.

This sounds a bit like the old xke type jags of yore... triple webers that were a *itch to tune, but when they ran... as far as sports cars go, its really a cliche even, lots of maintenance... triumph, mg, austins... why would anyone expect less from a Ferrari and yet there reliability is quite good overall, and I've heard plenty of horror stories from BMW owners... taken all together I'm with Cloud on this one, living in San Diego I see alot of Ferraris, Porsches etc. and either a lot of people own them, which is possible, but a lot of them are on the road... when they get older though it'll probably be like what I'm experiencing with my 968 which was pretty badly abused... but on the up side its a hell of alot less expensive than restoring a Ferrari...

I have only driven a BB ( Berlinetta Boxer ) , a Testarossa , and a Maranello 550. The BB was a colossal PITA to drive , shift, etc but fast as hell, the Testarossa seemed dreadfully slow ( for what I expected a Ferrari to be anyway..) and I still have it on my list as one of the ugliest five Ferraris ever, and the Maranello while beautiful ( IMO ) very civilized and fast and no criticism that I can think of, was simply not inspiring enough and did not have the road feel of the 968 . But I agree with everyone here that there's something about most Ferraris that just appeals to the soul. Overall and with only few exceptions the most beautiful looking, sounding and most exciting cars to drive. Perhaps some are also reliable but I have yet to hear an honest owner of one support that myth, lol.

Expensive maintenance O.K. but more maintenance? I don't think so, not more than Beemers surely. But I don't know. I'll defer to those who do.

I did work on a few of them .

Problem for me is i don't fit in the car witm my 200 cm .

Second thing is the older cars you should try to keep them dry , they get all kinds of problems from moisture .

But they all where fun to drive ,great sound and handeling

lol - of course i will need to find out what the enthusiasts call a ferrari. we know that porsche enthusiasts are quick to tell you that porsche is pronounced with 2 syllables, not one, and that bmw enthusiasts know that it is "bimmer" not beamer or beemer (unless it's a motorcycle). what the heck is ferrari?

No idea, but I lived around a fake Daytona when we lived in OC, and I always called it the "FauxRarri".

Here's one more reason why you should never own a a Ferrari ( unless of course you have " throw away " money , and tolerance for being without the car for months until parts come in to get it fixed :

My boss has a weekend house in Carmel, on 17 mile drive ( for those of you not familiar with the venue , just google home prices there ) and made quick friends with his neighbor who has, and still owns a bunch of Ferraris among other classics, Jags, etc. My boss also has a new Maserati GT so they were talking the other day about cars and the neighbor conveyed the PITA of owning a Ferrari.. ANY Ferrari, according to him , in terms of maintaining it and the multiple mechanical problems. He also said something interesting about the Testarossa, which I think is amont the top 5 butt-ugliest Ferrais made; another one of his Ferrari club members has been trying to sell his Testarossa, which has low miles and is allegedly in mint condition. Listed it for $ 60 K, the best offer he got to date was $ 15K !! The dealer told him he's lucky to even get that and he should take it because no one wants those cars.. the listings you see on autotrader, etc asking $ 50K-$80K are laughable according to the dealer, he stated that none of those cars sell , or if they do it's for about 1/4 of the asking price, just for parts. Wow, a Ferrari whose market value is less than a 968, lol.. who would have thought.. ?

That's wild - but I agree that the Testarossa is the very definition of ugly. Makes me wonder about the asking vs. selling prices of other cars, including 968's. Everybody thinks their stuff is worth so much more than it actually is, it seems.

Spotted in Belgium ( or so claims the story which accompanied these photos. ) So I wonder if Philippe ( Bulti ) traded in his 968 for something a little even more exclusive and did not share the news with the forum , just yet ...

Trade my sweetheart for a car with all spare sparts available? NEVER, lol.

The licence plates of all the cars BUT the Ferrarri are Belgian, but sadly enough it's not mine.

If it was, I could sell it and use the money to buy a 918, which looks waaaay better, IMO. And is a Porsche off course :-)

Agreed, I'd take the 918 any day any time over anything else.

Here's a story from which we learn a lesson : if you have a Ferrari and think of racing a Porsche ..don't ! Porsches apparently have better brakes . ( well, ok maybe not the one Paul Walker was in, RIP, but the one in this story .. ) http://jalopnik.com/250-000-ferrari-tota...1694082956

On my wayhome from work today a 458 and I were leap frogging through traffic (safely of course), what a beautiful car. If my budget allowed, I would get one.

Yes, hard to argue with the beauty of ( most ) Ferraris, but I'll take even the 968's pop up lights ,any time, any day over those design monstrosities many new cars ( including, and maybe especially the 458 California ) refer to as headlights assemblies. Seriously ?!

As if the Broadway marquis light bulbs rows were not ugly enough , must you have them take up 3/4 of the entire length of your cars' hood ?! Hell, in that case why not have them go all the way up against the windshield ?! Yuk.

Those lights are huge, but in person they work and looks great.

I've seen a few on the road but none close up enough - perhaps the proportions do work better than in photos ( I sure hope so ! )

But then , why would anyone mess with this 60s " perfection " ?! - they should have left things alone , lol.

I found this article to be rather interesting... I was under the impression Ferrari had a strictly observed philosophy of rejecting any requests whatsoever to produce additional cars exceeding their planned quota ( even pure stock models ) regardless of how much money they were offered, or by whom ..much less customizing anything . Hmm.
