I've gotten a lot of flack when comparing the 968 with the Dino, but I think there is enough similarity among the two to categorize the 968 as the Dino of the Porsche world ; both underpowered compared to the other models , both limited production, and both arguably the most beautiful model of the entire line in the brand's history . I'm not suggesting the 968 will ever reach a market value anyway near the Dino's , nor even close proportionally to their respective original price, but maybe some day those 911 purists , and for that matter anyone else who find those upside-down bathtubs, glorified VW appealing for some reason will wake up and realize what they're missing. Or not..., lol.

I am becoming more and more fund of the responses to my original post. It is very clear that we all have different opinions of the "true" value of our 968's.

The value, as I can read from the posts, is divided into two categories. Monetary and emotional. I don't think you will find many people emotionally involved in their Toyota Camry or their Honda Accord even though they are very well crafted machines. That's the difference with the Dino, the 914, The Fiat Spider and many of the classic machines of the past. They where not made for speed but for Grand Touring. The 968 is a beautiful designed car and there is not a day, when I take her out, without a comment or a compliment is given........and I kind of enjoy that. That makes me proud of having something different.....and it makes it more fun to clean, maintain in the garage.

Kaj, I think you hit on a main point here about our 968's. They are fun to drive, clean, tinker and be seen in. I always get compliments in mine and it brings an immediate ear to ear grin to my face. The 968 was my first Porsche and I have purchased two since. We drove the boxsters twice when we came out to the west coast gatherings. Great car with good handling. I've contemplated purchasing a cayman and of course a 911. But these are just pleasurable flights of fancy. We have something most people don't have, a 968. You can say what you want about them but if they are fun, bring you pleasure and a grin to your face then what more do you need? Hoping that the value goes up doesn't really bring me any great pleasure. Would I like them to get the financial recognition I think they deserve, of course. But if that happened it would become more of an investment which would change the value of the pleasure I derive from it. I'd drive it even less for fear of reducing the investment value.

There are plenty of Porsche's to buy as an investment vehicle. I didn't buy mine for that reason and it is never brought into my consideration. I drive it for fun. What's the value of fun?

you have hit the nail on the head.  the 968 falls short of optimal in almost every statistical comparison, yet is still a fun car to drive.  i bought mine IN SPITE of the fact that it was a porsche.  i bought it IN SPITE of the fact that it was not a sports car.  i bought in IN SPITE of the fact that it was big, heavy and slow.  it resonated with me anyway, and i had a blast owning, tinkering, and playing with it.  in a perfect world, i could have hung onto it.  it would have just sat there though, and with as much work as i put into it, it was better to see it "grow up and leave the nest" and go to somebody who would actually do what it was built for, which is drive it.

I would think something to be said for last water-cooled rear transaxle car ever made by porsche. Used to be the last front engine, not anymore.

um - other than the panamera, and the SUVs, i think all porsches are rear transaxle.  all of them are water-cooled now too.

That is a 928 GTS, not a 968.  928 GTS had 5.4 Litre V8, 355 bhp, 5 speed manual (most), front engine rear transaxle, more technology than other cars of the time. I wish that I had one now.

at $22k, with that many miles on it, the interior would have to be spotless, with no wear showing whatsoever on the seats.  the exterior would have to be free of dings, dents, or major scratches.  all service would need to complete and up to date.  the top would need to be in decent shape, with no discoloration of the window, or popped stitches.  the wheels would need to be free of road rash.  all modifications would need to be reversible, with all OEM parts available.

Factory M030 - add $4-5k seems to be the case in all of the sales where the sellers knew M030 was a special option. The last two I know of were in the 85k mile range and sold for $24 and $26k. Both were well maintained examples.

Speed Yellow, Riviera Blue and maybe Maritime Blue are the colors that can command more premium from the factory as they're a bit flashy and rare - plus were available as 968 Clubsport colors.

re: M030 - that was the case years ago.  i've been watching this one pretty closely.  on average today it barely adds $1000.  there will always be the outlier, but on average, that's what it is.  this is because the equipment is almost always in need of rebuilding, is an outdated design, costs more to maintain, and is generally undesirable to anybody other than a collector or an autocross guy looking at points.  as the prices of these cars falls, the "cool factor" of M030 is also falling, due to the disparity in cost to maintain.

 

re: 928GTS - i sure wish the 968 had anything at all to do with that car.  it would be nice to pick up some of that value.

For speed yellow you can add $ 10 K to any 968 and likely get it , for riviera blue count on about $ 5 k more ..all else being equal of course ..

My mechanic still claims that the 968 is much better built than the 928. I guess due to what they learned from the mistakes in the early 924/944/928 years. Now the 928 GT and GTS are collecting big bucks. I regret selling my 1980 928 "The Shark". I loved that car and it only had 29000 miles on it when I bought it....well, well money talks...bulls*** walks...and small change rides the bus!!!
